Despite the open receivers, all of the following plays were either throwaways or sacks:

Terrace Marshall wide open in the middle of the field waving his arm in the air:

Terrace Marshall on an underneath crossing route with zero defenders around him (he's running to the right, where there was nothing but open green space):

Gilbert wide open in the end zone frantically waving down Myles to throw him the ball. Myles waits, hesitates, waits a little more, then finally throws the ball to Gilbert. By the time he did, the MSU defender had caught up to Gilbert and it was an incomplete pass. Gilbert should have already been holding the ball in the end zone by this point:

Arik Gilbert breaking out of his route at the first down marker with zero defenders in the middle of the field:

Gilbert and Emery both wide open with 7+ yards between them and the nearest defender:

Koy Moore wide open in the middle of the field:

Another third down, Gilbert OPEN and breaking out of his route. Ball should have been out by now, but Brennan hangs onto it and takes the sack. You also have Emery out of the slot at the bottom with no defender within 4 yards of him:

Terrace Marshall again WIDE OPEN on the sideline, Brennan instead throws it to a well covered Arik Gilbert. Gary Danielson actually mentioned this live on air wondering why Brennan was trying to squeeze the ball to Gilbert when Marshall is standing there wide open. Marshall was visibly frustrated after this play:

Guys were this open on almost every single play. We score 50+ points with 500+ yards if Brennan just gets the ball to the guys that are open. It's almost like he was playing with his eyes closed at times and just refused to throw the football.

Thank you! Brennan just doesnt have it. Receivers were open this was the same offense from last year he just cant run it. Keep in mind that may be the weakest secondary we will face all year. The windows will only get tighter.

Brennan was intimidated by the moment and it showed. He is not the answer.

We were getting to Costello and about the same rate as they were getting to Brennan. The difference in results is bc of timing. They got rid of the ball a split second sooner than we did. It’s painfully obvious that Brennan is second guessing his gut instinct/reaction. Several times on short timing throws (which in our offense is an extended handoff) he hitched and/or pumped and completely blew the play up. Offensive play calling was not bad tbh. Execution by Brennan was poor.

Brennan looked like it was his 1st start and like he hasn't played a meaningful snap in 4 years.

He was freaking out the entire game..zero poise...but I’m going to keep hoping he figures it out and relaxes. Hey Myles..this isn’t life or death...relax

He is not throwing to open spaces. He is trying to throw to open receivers. Anticipation is his issue. Probably too big for him.

That’s somewhat revealing but he wasn’t setup on some of those.

Pic 1: by the time he sets that could be a pick 6.
Pic 2: he’s about to scramble from the rush.
Pic 3: that one was a straight up miss.
Pic 4: another straight up miss, perfectly set but nada
Pic 5: he’s still dropping back. Could easily have been a pick 6 if he throws off his back foot or waits to get set.
Pic 6: huge miss, blown for sure

I’m not saying he’s the guy because I’m not seeing the “it” factor but some of those could have been disasters had he thrown

Thanks for doing that, great analysis and clearly overstates the obvious.

Nice post!
You could tell Brennan was nervous and had the “Happy Feet”. I noticed several of those watching it live - where he either held on to the ball and took the sack, or scrambled when he had an open receiver. He looked lost for sure.

Might get a lot of hate for this one, but that second photo requires Brennan to either climb the pocket OR dip around the defender and throw on the run and hit Terrace before the linebacker bears down on him.

And I just don't think he can do that.

Joe could do it in half a second with smaller hands and a weaker arm. Brennan looks slow and sorta unwieldy with the ball. It seems like he needs a perfect pocket and the play can't break down or he's just going to throw it away.

If he throws this to #5 that’s a pick

If emery continues running he’s running right into a defender. But yes he should have thrown a lot of balls

I wonder how much of this is missing Joe Brady and/or inadequate QB coaching? Brennan did not look prepared to hit WRs before their cuts. He didn’t look prepared for QB pressures. He also didn’t look confident in throwing the passes. It got better in the 2nd half from the TV view but he didn’t look ready.

In addition the OLine is shaky and there weren’t as many creative uses of RBs in the passing game. As dynamic as Emery is supposed to be put him in the slot more often and let’s go. They did finally do some of this in the second half.

Well , his perspective is much different than ours.

I think he lacks the mind to know where guys should be...and turn to check down...make the throw and let guys make plays
