Exactly. We took our vacation to upstate NY(and our return trip to Vermont 15 yrs.later)last June. Stayed in the northern Catskills in Jefferson. Visited Cooperstown while we were there. First off, upstate NY is absolutely gorgeous! We stayed in a cabin 4 miles down a gulley by a creek. It was wonderful! Secondly, outside of NYC, NY is a mostly rural and conservative state. People think NYC represents all of NY; not even close to being the case.

That's true and also true of most western states but the representation is liberal because of those big cities therefore the perception is that those states are completely liberal. When those big cities control the narrative in terms of political representation then it's natural to describe the entire state as liberal. VA has become this way. Many more rural, conservative areas in the state but the bigger cities control the vote.
