How can an NFL rookie get out of their contract after year 1? Is it possible?

Of course I'm talking about Burrow. I doubt he'd try because of his competitiveness and loyalty to the state of Ohio, but just spitballing.

Would demanding a trade work? I understand they can say no, but you'd have to think they would cave if a team traded a lot for Joe. That organization clearly doesn't care about winning. The stories about their facilities compared to other teams are eye-opening. Their inability to produce a decent roster is laughable, especially on the OL. How many QBs need to have their careers ruined there before the NFL demands they make improvements?

Can the Competition Committee get involved and say they aren't trying to win or protect players and must do something?

Really don't want Burrow's potential wasted like Palmer's.

No. The team would have to release him.

Otherwise they own his rights for the length of the contract.

Besides, this is year 1 with Joe, year 2 with the new HC and front office. They paired him with a very talented rookie WR in the same draft. Rookie RT who won't suck forever.

This is after no training camp or preseason. If this was year 3 with no improvement, it would be worse. It's game 2

frick that.

It isn't chicken shite to say you're worried about your health, safety, and career because your employer doesn't give a frick about any of those things.

I fully admit I don't know much about NFL contracts.

Is that a bad thing? Not like I'm pretending to know more than I do.

But cool bro, you really got me

Jeez people act like the first pick going to a shitty team is a new thing.

Take off your P&G glasses for a minute and breathe.

Really only 2 ways out of the contract. Cut or retire. He can be traded to another team, but still under the same contract.

The Bengals situation wasn't a secret when he was drafted. He should have pulled an Eli Manning before he was drafted if he wanted to play for a better team.

I disagree
They’re rebuilding
He’s part of it

If he’s the next coming, he will turn the team around

I know it's not the first time, but it's the first time I've really cared (for obvious reasons). Is that weird?

I'm not an expert on these things so I'm asking a question instead of pretending to knowitall. Purple and gold glasses have nothing to do with it. Just a question.

Thank you to the people that responded with the answer. Seems he's just SOL.

I mean, every #1 pick goes to a bad team. That’s the whole idea.

Take a look at how bad Peyton Manning and his team were his first year. If the media was the same today, Peyton would have been immediately written off as a bust.

Troy Aikman went 1-15.

When you're the first pick, you're going to a bad team.

I'm just extremely doubtful the Bengals will show the commitment to winning and rebuilding that those two organizations showed once they had their QBs.

Considering the long term health consequences of successive hits and the fact that the Bengals seem unwilling to invest in an o line, it’s not showing a lack of knowledge to be concerned about Burrow’s future well being

He has too much talent to waste it being another David Carr that gets sacked 10 times a game. He has every right to demand a trade
