CFB flashback: 1990 season

We’ve recently discussed 1998, 1996, and 1984. 1990 may be one of the most bizarre seasons yet...and rivals 2007 IMO.
Notable events:
- Preseason #1 and defending champ Miami loses their opener to BYU. The Cougars would finish 10-3, giving up a then bowl record of 65 points to Texas A&M.
- BYU’s rich qb tradition continued as South Texan native Ty Detmer won the Heisman Trophy.
- Gene Stallings takes over the Alabama program, and promptly drops a game to Southern Miss and Brett Favre.
- In one of the worst officiating mistakes of all time, referees give Colorado five downs to punch it in against Missouri in the game’s final moments. CU wins 33-31. Inexplicably, the game stands and not much of an uproar is made on the sidelines.
- ND beats Miami in South Bend in a matchup of national powers. This ends Miami’s hopes of repeating, although they still finished with an AP vote for #1, thanks in part to their thrashing of Texas in the Cotton Bowl, 46-3. The Canes racked up over 200 yards in penalties.
- a Scott Sisson field goal gives Georgia Tech a last second win over #1 Virginia, coached by the great George Welsh.
- Auburn matches Alabama’s loss to Southern Miss, losing 13-12 to the Golden Eagles and nearly falling out of the rankings after being #2 two weeks prior.
- David Klingler lit up scoreboards after the departure of Heisman Winner Andre Ware. Cougs’ probation prevented them from bowls despite a 10-1 record. They finished the year with a 62-45 win over Arizona State in Tokyo.
- Florida, at 6-1, was ineligible for the SEC crown. One would argue Tennessee was more deserving at 5-1-1 because they smashed the Gators 45-3 in Knoxville.
- Colorado, who rallied to #1 despite a tie against Tennessee in the opener, and a loss @Illinois, and the controversial Missouri win, knocked off the Irish in the Orange Bowl on a questionable call negating Rocket Ismail’s potential game-winning TD. This cements the AP title for the Buffs.
- Georgia Tech started the season unranked, but entered the Citrus Bowl with a single blemish, a tie against Mack Brown’s UNC squad. The Jackets throttled Nebraska 45-21. This prompted Tom Osborne to vote GT #1, giving the Jackets a Coach’s Poll title by a single vote. This remains the last D1-A/FBS title by a Georgia school.

Lord forgive me, but I’ll never forgive Stull for that. That’s when I knew he was gutless.

I wouldn't consider myself some Notre Dame sunshine pumper, but we were the best team in the country that year; if there were 100 iterations of that season, we would have come out on top more often than anyone else. That was Holtz's best team and that roster was absolutely loaded.
Beat final #3, #7, #8, #16, and #20 and really beat #1 if it weren't for one of the most bull-shite calls I have ever seen in college football (and who shouldn't have been in that game at all given the five down crap).

I guess the only interesting fact I have for us is that SC and UGA played annually from 1958-1989.
We didn't play in 1990 or 1991. Series was renewed when we joined the SEC in 1992 and have obviously played them every year since. So we've played them every year since 1958 save the 2 years in 1990-1991.

Reggie Brooks was a great RB

I'd just graduated from CU, I transferred, and took LSD to watch the Orange Bowl that year. I remember having the mindblowing revelation that the optimum strategy was to get the guy with the ball. That was a fun night.

Hmm... I see a loss to a 5-6 Stanford team that was destroyed by some moderately good Pac-12 teams.

That doesn't mean much to me. Richt's two best teams at Georgia didn't win the SEC (2007 and 2012). Spurrier's best team at Florida was 2001, not 1996. Tressel's best team at Ohio State was 2005, not 2002.

And I would argue that 2015 was Meyer's best Ohio State team, Carroll had several teams (2007 and 2008) that were in the same league as his title-winning teams if not better, and so on and so on. Weird shite happens in a sport...A) being played by 18 - 22 year olds, B) with a fairly limited number of possessions within a game, C) a limited number of games and data points in a single season, and D) highly asymmetric scheduling.

Johnny Majors just couldn't beat Bammer huh? Also why did Tennessee and Ole Miss play in Memphis?

Love these threads.
That was a fun year. Colorado was involved in some crazy games back then.
1990 was the year of Texas’ return, with an outside chance at the NC. Until Miami took out their frustrations in the cotton bowl. It took Texas years to recover from the abuse that day.

So many teams had a claim at #1 by year’s end. Miami may have been playing as well as anybody at the end.
Notre Dane may have been the most talented, but they still had 3 losses. 1990 seems like the type of season that would have produced a two-loss champ. But 3? No way.

Played from ‘77-‘83. It was called the Mirage Bowl and then the Coca-Cola Classic. Just another attempt to globalize the game. They had good matchups though. The last two were Nebraska v Kansas State and Wisconsin v Michigan State. I believe that win in Japan clinched the Big Ten title for the Badgers.

We certainly didn't deserve a title - no question about that.

Favre's personal heroics against Alabama and Auburn (they should have beaten UGA too) duped LSU into hiring Curley Hallman, who promptly destroyed their program.
So in a way, it wasn't that bad of a loss.

Started 0-3 but beat #3 Tennessee in Knoxville. Finished 7-5 but with a loss to Louisville in the Fiesta Bowl.

That was a glorious game and I don't even like BYU - that's how much people hated Miami.
Only comparable opening game is when Arizona State whipped preseason #1 and two-time defending National Champ Nebraska 19-0.
Nebraska averaged like 50 points a game the previous year and couldn't score a fricking point. It was glorious.
It would be like if UCLA shutout Bama or Clemson.
