Tournament organizers had reason to believe the two men fished in an area that was outside of the tournament boundaries and guidelines. They called in LDWF agents who took the investigation to the next level.
Now if you're wondering what's the big deal about cheating in a fishing tournament, let me share this with you. Their resulting catch and weigh-in totals earned them first place in the tournament and over $5,500 in prizes and trophies.

The punishment for fishing contest fraud could mean a fine of up to $3,000 and up to one year in jail. The exact punishment for the two men accused of this crime has yet to be determined.

I've heard of people cheating during tournaments but never seen anyone arrested.

Definitely something fishy about this.

Yes, the police can get involved but it's usually a catch and release scenario.

I know a guy that won a truck and bass boat in one tournament. Ever since talking to him I’ve wondered how they keep people from cheating, seems too easy and some big bucks at stake in some.

And the story makes no mention about how big the fish were, so not interested.

“What you in for, Killer”?
“Well, the tournament rules specified a particular area for competition, and I was angling outside the boundary.”
“God damn. You is a mean mother fricker.”

It started probably due to years ago late 80’s or early 90’s some guys from Florida lived on the LA side of Toledo Bend temporarily. They were cheating in the Bass Tournaments in E TX and Western LA. They made a nice living off winning the larger bass tournaments by cheating.
I knew one of the deputy’s investigating the assault of the guy named John, who called the cheaters out in Texas. He is retired now he gave me the reason why the law was passed In both LA and TX.
It was a tournament you could fish 8 lakes in the area and top prize was $60k in E TX. A man named John, called out the guys to the tournament director. The cheaters got disqualified, beat guys butt who called them out, and Game wardens along with deputy’s found the group of cheaters with Florida strain bass in a tank in the back of the cheaters truck.
Authorities after investigating them found out these guys were entering tournaments in LA and E TX, getting bass out of Florida, entering the bass in tournaments, and winning serious money by cheating. The believe it was well over $100,000. When one guy was not be allowed to enter a tournaments another guys in the group would enter a tournament.
This is why they made cheating in bass tournaments against the law.
The guy who assaulted the guy name John screwed that guy up bad where he needed surgery on his eyes. He got a few years in the state pen in Texas and died in prison trying to fight another inmate.
My friend does not know if the others in the group got charged with anything besides minor offenses.
