Welcome new patriots.

Had 0 firearms as of January 1, 2020. Now have an AR-15 carbine (5.56), AR-15 pistol (5.56), Glock 36 (.45 ACP), and a Sig Sauer P320x compact (9 mm) with red dot sight. Building my son a .300 blackout as well. So much fun to shoot. Been spending lots of time at the range with my children. Great new hobby. And now much better positioned to protect my family. Recent events have demonstrated that the police will no longer be able to do so.

9mm, .45 acp, 5.56. Got the primary calibers covered.
If you don't mind... you're going to want to fill in some around that. I know the temptation will be to add a 1911 in .45, because that's America. Both the Filipino (Armscor/RIA or ATI) and the Turkish (Tisas, currently imported by SDS) are fine guns, and great value for the price. You can probably get a fullsize USGI for under $400 right now, still. I have one of each, and don't regret any of the purchases. All are "true" 1911's that can be upgraded with Wilson etc parts; if you had to pin me down I'd say Armscor/RIA has the best warranty so if prices are equal across the board, I'd get that one. But the ATI has a gorgeous parkerized finish and my Tisas is nice and tight.
I know there are American brands that cost a few hundred more, and that might mean something to you. If so, my only warning would be- careful with the Remington. It's supposed to be a good gun, but the company is filing bankruptcy right now. I wouldn't pay full price for that.
I know there are fans of lots of brands of 1911, but honestly, if you can get a RIA or ATI for HALF the price of something else and it's not your primary gun, it might be a better move to get the RIA.
quote:you may want to add .22 lr to the mix, for truly affordable range time. If you're in the BR area, I saw a couple Rugers at Jim's, including a used Mk II under 300. People aren't jumping on these because they're not defensive guns, but they ARE fantastic shooters and can eat about anything. And the accuracy of something like a Mk II will greatly help you with the other pistols... it's not hard for even a new shooter to make quarter-size groups at 10 yds with one. No recoil and limited 'bang' will eliminate flinching, and when you shoot a bullseye out with it, you're naturally going to try to approach that level with the larger calibers.
So much fun to shoot. Been spending lots of time at the range with my children. Great new hobby.

I'm probably in that number, because my last purchase before this year was 30 years ago.
I hope all these new gun owners are taking lessons in gun safety, etc.
especially things like over penetration, the dynamics of how far guns can travel beyond intended targets, etc

Thanks for the advise! I appreciate it.
I forgot to mention that my father purchased my son a Umarex/H&K licensed 416 .22lr. He absolutely loves it. As you say, a terrific training tool and cheap to operate.

BLM gearing up to fight back against all the crazy gun nuts probably. If you can't beat em with reason join them.

Same here, but 25 years ago.
The last time I bought a gun before this year, I literally walked up to the counter, told them what I wanted, paid for it, and left the store. There was no background check.
This year it was 3 hour wait.

.53 cent a round. Small price to pay for safety

Same—will be replacing a lot of sports watching time this fall with range/hunting time.

Yup—and have my family protect themselves too.

I saw a lady looking at 380s because she was afraid of the 9mm she had just purchased.
I pulled her aside and told her before she buys a 380 she needs to ask how many boxes of ammo she could buy. (They had one box and told her that they did not know when they would get more in)
Told her she would be better off spending her money buying 9mm to practice with and taking a course.

I'm hearing as many as 30 million guns have been sold so far this year, and yes I'm in that number on first time gun owners.

Larry C. Johnson: There Is an Unprecedented Gun and Ammo Shortage in America Today
By Jim Hoft Published August 14, 2020
There is a quiet revolution underway across the United States that signals how the average American is reacting to the Democrat campaign of supporting rioting and chaos in major cities. American citizens are arming themselves to the teeth and this includes many who previously supported gun control measures.
If you doubt me, go on-line and try to buy a box of 9mm, 380, 45 or 300 blackout ammunition. If you can find it you will be paying a premium that is without precedent. Around the first of July, you could buy a box of 9mm cartridges for about $12 a box. That works out to .24 cents a cartridge. Today, you are going to pay around a $1 a bullet if you can find it.
I was describing the shortage in Florida the other day to a great friend who lives in Iowa. He thought I was crazy and assured me he could get me 9mm ammo. I egged him on and asked him to buy everything he could and ship it to me. He was certain he could get the .24 cents a bullet price. One hour later he texted me that the local gun stores were sold out. That’s Iowa. Same applies across the country. Ammunition is scarce.
The mainstream media and the Democrats can bury their heads in the sand and pretend that the rioting and looting are isolated phenomena and do not affect the average American. WRONG. People are paying attention and what they see is frightening many to take the first step in protecting themselves. They are buying up guns.
If Democrats genuinely believe that there is a mood in America to take away guns or limit sales of AR-15s and other long guns wrongly perceived as “assault rifles”, they are in for a rude awakening come November. The new gun buys, who have shelled out at least $1000 to buy themselves some peace of mind are not going to willingly surrender what they see as an essential tool for protecting themselves and their families.
