Drum set advice

My son enjoys playing the drums. We bought him an electronic set ( Donner ) which is garbage. I didn't want to piss the neighborhood or my wife off with a real set. Well now I'm ready to buy him a real set, but could use some tips and advice. Want to keep the set under $600. I saw some starter sets on Amazon from Ludwig and Pearl for around that price.

Get a used Roland TD15 or one along those lines. The high end Roland's are great, especially for a kid that can plug head phones in and play at any time.

The starter kits are decent drums these days. I don't think you can go wrong with Ludwig, Pearl or Tama.

The entry-level kits from either of these makers will do the job, as will entry-level kits from Tama and Gretsch.

I think you should buy used. You can get a decent used kit vs a crappy starter kit for the same amount.

I would try to find a used kit that includes cymbals, hardware, throne, and the shells. Watch some Youtube videos on how to properly tune and setup the kit as well. The cheaper kits always sound terrible even with new heads so I would highly consider spending more than you originally planned.
Great brands: Tama, Ludwig, PDP, DW, Gretsch, Pearl, and Mapex
Musicians Friend has some great complete kits for around $700-$1000 if you want to read reviews and get a better idea.

Check out the Gretsch Catalina series.

Yep, plenty of good advice ITT OP. Pearl Tama Mapex Gretsch etc all good brands. Cant go wrong with some of their starter series.
The big thing would be dont just get what you can afford. Dont overspend either. But let your kid test drive some kits and go with what he likes. Youve gotta like your instrument. Saving a few hundred in the short term wont matter if you spend $600 on a kit he wont ever play because it sounds cheap.

He's 16. He's been listening to Metallica,Ratt, Crue and KISS. Started playing drums a year ago. I want a good set that he can build up as he gets older. I bought him a Dinner electric set off Amazon, big mistake. Set is crap.

Spend a little more than you’re willing to and get him the Ludwig Centennial with 24” kick. If he sticks with it and forms a garage band, he can really make those things sound nice when mic’ed up. Plus they offer a big sound for the genre he’s into.

Go see Frank at Ray Fransen’s Drum Center in Kenner. He’s super knowledgeable/helpful and has a nice selection of all the brands mentioned above. Pricing is competitive with big box stores and internet. Local businesses could use the support right now.

This is the right answer. I was in the same position and went with the Roland TD25-KV. Playing on an electric set translates to an acoustic set and keeps the sanity in the house. Also, he can take it with him to an apartment as he won't be home too much longer. The real right answer is to learn guitar.

I told him get a TD15 b/c of his budget, but I have a TD25kv also. I love it, can play at any hour and not bother the fam. The module is amazing too.

My neighbor has the 50 and it is awesome, but I don't think the value is worth the extra dough. I am very satisfied with the 25 too and you are so right about playing whenever you want.
Imagine having this kit when young.
