Damn. Glad you had a detector. If you can afford the generator, no doubt a CO detector fits in your budget and should be in use while running your generator.
I’m told fire departments will give you CO2 detectors free upon request. Under normal circumstances, they’ll even come install them for you.

Half of Hurricane Laura deaths were from generators
I have a discussion with my 6 y/o frequently after I tell him not to do something dangerous and he say " But I didn't get hurt". Explaining to him that although it didn't happen THIS time it could next time.
Be smarter than a six y/o folks...

CO2 detectors wouldn’t do any good for detecting carbon monoxide.

Boy, this is embarrassing. Meant carbon monoxide detectors.
Maybe those fumes did their damage after all.

I have a 22kw standby generator that was installed 2 years ago and this is the first time that I have had to use it. Everything had been fine since Thursday. That is until last night when my CO monitors started going off. Got the family out of the house and started looking around. There was no wind outside and I believe that allowed the exhaust gas to come into the attic via the eave vents. I brought a 4 gas monitor into the house to verify if the monitors were working properly and indeed they were. Went into the attic and I got readings over 150 ppm. Shut off generator and opened doors and windows to vent the house. Luckily the monitors worked and we were able to spend the rest of the night at my parents. I will be making a call shortly to the installers to see about having my set up moved to another location.
