This is some scary stuff. Just want to make sure we're doing it right for next time. We had ours on the back patio running the chords through a window next to the exhaust vent from our portable A/C. We covered the gaps with a towel. The distance was about 7'-8'. I couldn't go much further because the generator would get wet. What did everyone else do?

That sounds pretty good though running a generator in the rain doesn’t concern me if you want to move it further away - there are battery operated carbon monoxide montiors/alarms you can purchase at the big box stores/hardware stores/on-line, and not expensive, to lessen your concern.

Think I'll purchase one and put it just inside the window to be careful.

the people dying are from running a generator inside.
those people are vulnerable to extinction due to a complete lack of intelligence

as long as it’s outside any enclosure there is nothing more that needs doing

So you heard about the 24 yr. old who died of carbon monoxide poisoning when he ran his generator INSIDE his house....

Sorry for his extended family, but doing that is just plain stupid.

In this day and age of detectors and all the warnings likely on the generator, or at least any manuals that came with it warning about operating the generator in enclosed areas, it is inconceivable how it still happens.

There was a story one time about a generator being run in the car port that was connected to main house via covered walkway. The carbon monoxide fumes passed through the attic connection and vented into the house.

I run mine in my garage with door open with generator shielded by eaves from rain.I put a shop fan blowing the exhaust out in the yard.I have read the exhaust can enter the attic through the soffit vents, the fan helps prevent that.I also have an idea the fan helps cool the the generator to a degree, not sure if that helps.
Sucker has been running 66 hours straight, projection is for electricity to be back on 10 pm 9/3.
I WILL have a stand-by generator as soon as contractor can hook me up one which I expect will be a few months.

I had mine running under carport for hours this evening before my wife started seeing the Facebook stories and texted to ask me if I had a carbon monoxide detector. Pulled out an old detector and sure enough it went wild. I have a room partially gutted on the opposite end of the house. Promptly moved that bitch to the middle of the backyard on a section of downed fence.

She’ll hold this one over my head for a good while.

Not always the case.

It's a good thing a few years ago (guess coming up on decade, time flies) I went to visit elderly parents in AR for Christmas. Snow storm hit and took out power across the state, some people without for months. Talking snow completely covered satellite dish on the roof

Anyway, Dad, a retired Civil Engineer and Purchasing Manager for Big 3 Oil Company gets out the gas camp stove to cook on. I walk into the garage to find him cooking bacon over gas with ZERO ventilation. I quickly lifted the garage door a couple feet and propped it open on a couple 5 gallon buckets.

Point is, smart people will do dumb stuff at times, especially during catastrophes.

You will start seeing more and more generators with this feature.

its running in enclosed areas that is the problem

if you have concerns then just set a box fan next to generator to blow the exhaust away from the house

Read a story after gustav, someone was running generator outside but on side of their house, did not realize it but the exhaust was close enough to his neighbors window unit that it sucked in some CO and gave his neighbor problems

Be very careful with generators and get a CO detector

Governor John Bel Edwards confirmed the five carbon monoxide poisoning deaths during a press conference Friday.

Lake Charles Fire Chief Shawn Caldwell said the carbon monoxide poisoning deaths in Lake Charles were caused by the family placing their generator in an attached garage with a door to the home left partially open.

Caldwell said five people were in the home at the time, with all of them dying.

Very sad.

I don’t have a generator, but I assumed I could place one near the edge of my back patio extension. It would be 15-20 from nearest entry but there is a soffit vent closer to it.

I think it’s paramount to have a working CO detector if you’re going to be using one.

Maybe this thread can save a life.

1 get a diesel generator
2 how damn dumb are you to put a gasoline generator near your family
3 rain is not going to shut down your generator
4 How many times do you need to read that you don’t put a generator in your garage
5 dumb people should die

I was watching HTV from Houma, and one guy called in to ask Martin Folse if he could run his generator inside if he ran some pvc pipe from the exhaust out the kitchen window.

Damn. Glad you had a detector. If you can afford the generator, no doubt a CO detector fits in your budget and should be in use while running your generator.
