Looks like Cali continues to shoot itself in the foot. Making it harder and harder for businesses to stay.
quote:

Uber would likely shut down temporarily for several months if a court does not overturn a recent ruling requiring it to classify its drivers as full-time employees, CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said in an interview with Stephanie Ruhle on Wednesday on MSNBC.

quote:

Uber and rival Lyft both have about a week left to appeal a preliminary injunction granted by a California judge on Monday that will prohibit the companies from classifying their drivers as independent workers.

quote:

If the appeal doesn't work out for Uber, it will bank on voters to determine its fate in voting on Proposition 22, which would exempt drivers for app-based transportation and delivery companies from being considered employees.

There is no way Lyft and uber can be profitable if they have to treat drivers as employees.

Going to put a hell of a dent in certain politicians’ plans to pay for Lyft and Uber to bring minorities to the polls in November.

They can just classify the black employees as full time employees. That way they save a ton of money and get praised at the same time.

I can’t figure out why Uber and Lyft have such a hard time turning a profit when they don’t really have to have physical assets. Assuming they take x percent of each fare it seems like they should be raking in absurd amounts of money and should just have employees and data storage to pay. What am I missing?

They have all sorts of physical assets. Obviously they need corporate space, but then there are hubs in many cities. Costs to pay developers for updating and improving the experience. The costs to carry insurance while all drivers are active. All the marketing/materials necessary to keep up. All of that has very real costs. It's not like they just made an app and provide no support to the drivers.

Yup. Looks like they finally paid off the right combination of politicians and judges.

California doesn't care about anyone keeping a business open. They want the business to do what is right according to the way they think. I am so glad that I don't live anywhere near California

i read the other day that lyft is going to provide free rides in november in under-served, i.e. black communities to help get these fine citizens of the united states of america to vote democrat.

I'm paraphrasing but that's what they're trying to do.

Going to backfire on Cali bigly when Uber shuts down in the state. Gonna piss off all those drivers who depended on driving for Uber in their spare time for extra income to make ends meet.

But frick Uber
