A window unit in 2 car garage in South Louisiana?

Our 17 year old son and his buddies want to make our garage into a ping pong table and weight lifting room. They offered to clean out our garage if we got them a window unit and let them hang out in there. We have 5 kids so the garage is filled with 20 bikes that break all of the time, skateboards, basketballs, gardening supplies, roller skates, stilts etc etc etc. I have given up on using it to park in because it’s just impossible with 5 kids. My house is clean and pretty orderly. My garage.... not so much.
I have no experience with window units. Any advice? Will it even work? It’s so hot here that I’m doubting a window unit will do a thing. There’s a pretty big window centered on the back wall of the garage and there’s another good sized window in a storage area/large walk in storage area. I think the original owners built that area to put the lawn mower or maybe even store a joe boat?? There’s a ramp to a door to that area so I’m just assuming.
Anyway, we could put a window unit in that window as well as in the window in the main garage area.
Oh and There’s no insulation in there. The walls are wood and that peg board stuff.

Should work fine. I've seen a couple in my neighborhood, but it looks kind of tacky IMO
But the previous owner of my house installed a central AC for our garage, so mine sits comfortably at 72 all day

You can fix that easy enough with the bats.
It isn't going to be super comfy (and will jack up your electric a bit), but it will work - closing the space up permanently/semi-permanently (getting the airgaps under the door sealed will be a challenge) will be the biggest part of the job - and only really doable in this weather if you fire up the A/C first.

How do you think we cooled things down in the South before central became all the rage in the late 60s/early 70s? The answer is: Window units in every room!

A window unit would be better than nothing. In my opinion though, garages are for parking cars. Leaving your car in the driveway or street looks tacky.

It depends on the size unit you get, but I don't see why it wouldn't work. With a window unit and some type of fan, it will at least be comfortable enough.

It won’t show. The unit will be on a brick wall that faces the swing set so no one will see it except the kids on the swing set. The garage is tucked completely behind our house waaaaayyyyy down the driveway

I have one in a 600 square foot apartment (no I do not live there myself 
) and it'll stay at 69 degrees all day. Probably better-insulated than a garage, but still... window units are pretty damned good in my opinion.

With no insulation it would take a mini split at least. And even that might not be enough. Would probably be ok except for the hottest months of the year

a window unit will not dent a 100 degree garage in the louisiana summer. unless you have some special garage with insulation, insulated door, out of the sun etc. This post was edited on 8/12/20 at 4:09 pm

A 2 car garage will be in the 400sqft range roughly. That is well within the capabilities of even cheap window units. Will it keep it cold if you're constantly opening the garage door? Obviously not. But it will serve the purpose otherwise.
In fact, at an old job we had a tool shed/work shop that was at least 15x20 with a single window unit. No insulation, standard metal building. And it was an icebox with the unt running.
ETA: Just measured on google maps, and it was 34x15

I assume they will be using the window unit while the garage door is open? I doubt that will do much. Creating air flow might be more effective. Open that window along with garage door and install a whirlybird vent in the roof.
If you do go with a window unit, make sure it’s properly sized for the SF of the space

I don’t like cars parked out front either, but the way the house driveway and yard are set up, you can’t see our cars. If you could, i wouldn’t be letting them take it over/ I’d park there

There’s a door on the side - a normal 30” door so they can keep the actual giant garage door closed and go in and out from the wood normal door

Normally for a room about the size of a garage (400 to 500sf) you would want about 10,000+ BTU unit. With no insulation, I'd bump that up to about 14,000 BTUs.
Is above the ceiling an open attic? if so, spraying or even placing sheet insulation up there will help.
And keep the garage door shut!
