East Cobb is 50 years old now. Vacuum? Priorities intensified.
Milton wonderously appeared.
Cumming, against all odds, wonderously appeared.
Alpharetta looked to be the new flee haven you refer to, but simply consolidated, and enough so, that the land and power grab that is Johns Creek came to be.
Atlanta´s boring as frick, but don´t make it out to be like other cities in the South. It´s much more dynamic.

Depends on what kind of living you plan on doing.
If it's closer to the city as a single guy with a very good white collar career and you want a condo with big city amenities and international flair then it's Atlanta > Charlotte > Nashville.
If you are looking to start a family but live close to the city then it's Charlotte > Nashville > Atlanta.
If it's suburban bedroom communities that you are looking for then Atlanta would be a great option imo. Atlanta > Nashville and Charlotte.

If I was single, probably Nashville. Top notch talent.
Charlotte if happily married.
I won’t even drive through Atlanta.

That said, I'm not all that familiar with all of the Atlanta suburbs. I lived in Smyrna/Vinings when I lived in Atlanta, and it was pretty bland back then.
You're behind the times. Smyrna is close to surpassing Marietta in population, got the Braves stadium and the Battery, craft breweries close by, etc. It has really blown up the last 3 years. My house isn't on the market yet and someone is coming by Sunday and if they want to buy it my arse is outta here as I have been in metro ATL about 10 years too long. Too much high density building going on for me.

If you had to live and work in one of those 3 cities which one would it be?
Kind of depends on age, what line of work you are in (banking, healthcare, real estate), relationship status, kids, etc.
If money isn't an issue - Nashville.
If you have a family - Charlotte, but Nashville (and its surrounding suburbs) are solid. Also, keep in mind of Tennessee's no state-income tax.
If looking for more breadth in jobs and higher-paying positions - Atlanta
If single - Nashville, but you really can't go wrong with either choice
If looking to settle down - Charlotte

If I was young and single I’d move tom Boise. But that’s another thread.

Our future is there in the not too distant future. But I have lived there before
