Can someone take me through the basics?
My 12 y.o. wants to stop with his X-box and move to a PC. Unfortunately he keeps saying we need buy about $1600 worth of hardware to build his “rig”.
My guess is he’s getting the info from You Tube and I’m totally not averse to building a PC- I did one about 15 years ago, I can’t imagine the steps have changed- but I also can’t fathom that a 12 year old needs a $1600 PC to play COD and whatever else he and his buddies do.
Help a brother out! Gracias!

1440p at 100 fps....is what he says.
I have no idea what’s good- I don’t want him to have junk, but I also think around $800 bucks is more reasonable.
Then (we’re talking now)....he says well, 60 fps would be ok.

Depending on the monitor and game(s) this could actually be a wide range of PCs. Is he wanted an ultrawide monitor or a 16:9? Or another way to ask it is 3440x1440p or 2560x1440p? Also, why 100fps? Does he have a 100hz monitor?
If he has a 3440x1440p monitor you almost have to treat it like 4k gaming because of the amount of pixels, in which case you'll need a pretty beefy video card.
If 2560x1440p this shouldn't be as big of a deal.

What games does he play? Be cautious of what he says he needs. A lot of these guys on YouTube and Twitch are 1. Playing all day every day at a high level because it's their job and 2. Being paid to promote the biggest and best PC that their sponsor sells (nzxt, iBuyPower, etc.)

Yeah quite frankly a 12 y.o. should be fine gaming at 1080p 60fps, and that can be accomplished pretty cheaply these days.

More than likely he isnt even factoring in the mouse, keyboard headset and monitors.
I would go with a ryzen x3700 processor
1070 GtX
16 mb of ram
X450 motherboard
650-750 watt PSU
That's pretty close to what I got and I run 200+fps in league and 80-100 fps in call of duty.
Everything maxed out and I play on 2 27 inch benq monitors. 2k display

I'd step that up to a 2070 or a comparable AMD graphics card. Maybe step the RAM up to 32GB but I think this is a good start.

A 2060 super would be a better choice imo. And 32GB RAM is way overkill. I have 16GB and I play 3440x1440p.

You can go 20xx series if you want. I'm trying to make this more realistic for OP. His son is asking for a PC enthusiast price range, which I believe to be a little much for what his son is going to do.
I would say no to the 32 gb ram unless you get it for a steal of a price
The graphics card should have 6-8gb's of DDR5 memory which is what your game is going to munch on.

Honestly 20X0 like isn't much more than the 10X0 line right now, price-wise.
2060 super >> GTX 1070, but about the same price.
Quite frankly,though, the next gen cards due to come out in the next 2 months are preliminarily looking to be significant upgrades from current gen cards.
AMD is going to be putting out the Big Navi cards to compete with Nvidias RTX30X0 and both are shaping up to be ~30% performance increase from current gen, which is quite a lot.
I have a GTX 1070 and want to upgrade because my rig is starting to struggle at 3440x1440p, but I'm personally waiting for the next gen.
