What happened to Zion these last 5 months?

This is my biggest question. Everyone on Twitter was talking about the minutes restriction and how they should’ve weighted the minutes more to the end of the game. My question is why is he even being restricted in the first place?

In February and March, his last ten games pre-covid, he was averaging around 33 minutes per game of playing time, he was starting to gel well with the team, and we were starting to win.

What happened in this 5 month span that caused his health to deteriorate so much that he got his minutes cut to 3 mins a quarter?

Post game interviews, he mentioned needed time to get his “flow back”. Why? He had the same amount of time off as all of his teammates who he playing 33 mins a game with them pre-covid? Like what on gods green fricking earth happened? All anyone talked about all quarantine was how good of shape Zion was in.

It’s as if everyone forget he was essentially getting full playing time pre-covid. I think it’s pretty clear he got injured sometime in July, and they are trying to keep this on the DL. There is no way you cut someone’s minutes in half after him being apparently super in shape all quarantine.

Because he missed 14 days of workouts and apparently did not exercise at all the entire time for...some reason.

I strongly believe him leaving the bubble was manufactured to give reason to limit him. My lone opinion

I think the restriction is based on getting a lottery pick and reason to keep gentry

Is he going to need to play 3 minute quarters every time he takes a week off? Surely that can’t be the precedent being set.

After all the progress and rest he’s had over 5 months, it got wiped by not playing with the team for what 12 days? That is honestly just not believable.

There has to be something wrong with him. Has to be. Same knee injury, another injury they won't tell us about, had Covid, whatever. SOMETHING is wrong.

You can't tell me that:
A) he is playing less minutes now (if healthy) after a long layoff than he did coming back from his knee injury in January.
B) after dealing with the exact same layoff as his teammates that he can't play 30 minutes JUST LIKE THEM. He isn't in any worse shape than any of them.

Absolutely none of this makes sense whatsoever. Only way it would is if Griffin says something, which he hasn't.

Yea, that's basically what Griff will probably tell us.

But guys miss 1-2 weeks for this type of stuff all the time, and you never see them eased in to this degree, not for the best player on a team. They come back and go right to their normal minutes.

We're being too conservative with him IMO, unless Griff says something none of us know about or are expecting.

As cautious as this training staff is they wouldn’t be playing him at all if something was wrong. As others have pointed out, this is the same ramp up they did with Favors when he was out after his mom died.

He’s fine. Our new medical staff has just horrendously overcorrected after the last one maimed people.

But to not put him in in the last 2:00... Gayle needs to clean house and find a staff who wants to win.

There's not much in this lottery talent wise to waste this golden opportunity, in favor of staying in the lottery, especially when we'll be at the very back of the lottery.

The playoff experience for this team would be much more valuable, considering our core is already in tact.

No we'll be in spot 13 and hit the 1% chance to get the third pick and snag Lamelo Ball. That's what our FO is betting on

This overreaction over his minutes is...bizarre to say the least. It’s been one game. If he’s still playing 15 minutes in game 6 of 8, then freak out. But our two toughest games are right at the beginning of this 8 game schedule.

What if, I don’t know, the team thought they could afford to gamble the first two games to make sure they had Zion nearly up to full speed in games 3-8? This isn’t “Zion taking a week off”. It’s Zion missing two weeks in the middle of a pandemic when the season is restarting in July. There’s nothing ordinary about this. It’s been ONE GAME. Against one of two very damn good teams. With the Clippers on deck.

Chill. Why on earth would the team tell people “we NEED to make sure he’s good when we play the Mem, Sac, SAS games?” It dampens the restart. Y’all are gonna be pissed and scream regardless because he missed time and we lost a game we likely would have won if he played the entire time. So what’s the point? Where’s the upside in telling the truth, if that is the truth?

And I’d argue my theory makes a lot more sense than:

- “Aaron Nelson is a moron.”
- “The team is trying to save Gentry’s job.”
- “We’re playing for draft picks.”
- “There’s a phantom injury.”
- “Our front office who has managed to turn around our entire trajectory in one offseason is incompetent.”

Maybe, it’s exactly what it looks like. The team didn’t want to blow out Zion’s knee in July....in the middle of a pandemic... after missing the entire tune up period...with the carrot being dangled being an LAL first round...against one of two teams we could very easily lose against even with Zion healthy. Gentry is pissed because we lost a close game and his job is on the line. The players are frustrated cause they want to win and compete in the postseason... and they legitimately know the talent is better than their record (listen to any J.J. redick ringed podcast if you are curious what our team’s confidence level is).

I don't know...he's being interviewed before the game saying he's in the best shape he's been since he turned pro. Where are they pulling this 15 minute stuff from. How about play until you are tired and raise your hand to come out when the fatigue compromises productivity.

Or if you don't trust him to do that look for the signs of fatigue that are universal and pull him when he displays them.

he has done hardly any 5 on 5 since March, he has been playing at his own speed when he practices so he's not in game shape at all. at some point though Zion needs to stand up and get himself in great shape

I fricking hate Lebron, but Zion has to take a page out of his book and spend a million a year just on his conditioning and health.

Man y'all doing too much with these conspiracies bruh. Did y'all watch Griffin press conference?

Basically they didn't want him to get special treatment as a rookie. ALL OF THE PELICANS STARTERS HAD MINUTE RESTRICTIONS in the first strimmagge game.

That was Zion first "ramp up" game since he been back so it acted as a scrimmage. He won't get real minutes until probably game 4 so please don't trip after today.

Thanks for this brother. Alot of casual Pelicans fans has been pissing me off lately. Like logic goes out the window for some folks man and emotional intelligence which I'm not displaying well right now lol but man Zion at this current phase is more detrimental to us right now with his shitty defense and conditioning tbh. Let the professionals do what they do and bring this kid in right.
