Lester, the OP has a point. IF LSU allows lets say a certain social justice political statement related to the Policing issues, etc. What if one player somewhere says I agree with disbanding the police. Another player on the same team says I support the Police. You see the problem. Lets go another way, lets say a football player is a secular liberal who puts on his shirt I support Abortion rights. Another player, lets say Traditional orthodox Catholic or Traditional Protestant Christian says Abortion is wrong. Does a University favor one over the other. Let go another one. A football player puts on his shirt I support Gun Control. Another player on the same team says I want to put on my shirt I support the 2nd amendment.

IF a University Public, or Private, if it gets any kind of Federal funding, allows one form of speech over the other, there indeed litigation risks because defacto the University is restricting speech and the fact that the Federal Government provides funding to Universities it defacto is party to favoring one form of speech over the other.
