NCAA Football Playoff: expansion to 8 teams ??

With all the COVID-19 schedule changes going on right now,to me, this is the perfect opportunity to test out a 8-team playoff system.
It could be a great money making opportunity for the schools. Are they possibly discussing this or is it being totally ignored?

Nope
Not gonna happen
They are not going to add additional games in a pandemic
It will go to 8 once the contract ends

This. It's all dollars and cents. When the contract runs out its 8 and I don't think there's even a debate. Only interesting part will be the format that decides where the games are played.

4 teams is fine...even with just 4 team format you get teams w no business in the playoff. See Oklahoma this year or washington in 2016

I kind of agree with Joel Klatt on expansion, we were arguing over which team between OU and Oregon was the better bad team.
Adding 4 more bad teams wouldn't be interesting. OU getting destroyed helped that argument too.

Oklahoma has been the perfect example as to why 4 teams is plenty.

OU was deserving. It was LSU that made them look like they didn’t belong.....

Do you think we will have fewer bowl games this year?
I'm thinking yes. And because of that, it would be a perfect opportunity to "test" the 8 team playoff for a single season. After this season, it goes back to normal until the contract runs out.

Klatt’s argument is based upon his belief that the “best 4 “ are getting into the current playoff pool. Alabama, Florida and Auburn were better than Oklahoma. Wisconsin and Minnesota were as good or better than Oklahoma. If you pick the best 8 teams, regardless of how many come from one conference then it would be a great playoff. It you limit it to conf champs, then you will have blowouts in half of the games.

NEAUX!!!! 4 has been too many already. Expand the regular season first.

I personally agree for this season. With condensed schedules bringing only conference games and likely rent a wins, bowl games likely being cancelled or dramatically changed and some conferences eliminating the conference championship game, 8 makes sense. This a unique situation that requires unique resolutions.
Say we lose 1 game and not win the conference title and get left out? Bet their will be lot of people changing their tune. Okla with essentially a pass to the playoffs,Clemson the same. Leaves 2 spots for Big 10, PAC 12, which sets up for Oregon to run the table, and the SEC. The big OOC games are usually the tiebreaker or eliminator in such cases. Not this year. So Bama, LSU and UGA could each be 1 loss teams and 2 would get left out. Makes sense

Oklahoma and Oregon were both really good teams last year. Oregon lost to Auburn on a last second touchdown at the beginning of the year.
Just because a historically great team in LSU embarrassed Oklahoma doesn’t make them a bad team. LSU embarrassed everyone at the end of last season. That Peach Bowl was not representative of the kind of team Oklahoma was last year.

My exact thoughts.

Not trying to be picky, but it is not the NCAA Football Playoff. It is the College Football Playoff committee that runs the playoffs for FBS schools. CFP Administration, LLC, manages the administrative operations of the College Football Playoff. Members of the company are the 10 FBS conferences and the University of Notre Dame. Five of those members represent leagues that have never played in the playoff.
Because of this, Division I FBS football is the only NCAA sport in which a yearly champion is not determined by an NCAA championship event. The NCAA has nothing to do the FBS College Football Playoffs.

just another opportunity for a team to be granted a mulligan.
win your conference championship and you're in.

They were no doubt the most deserving team, but any of the other three teams in the playoff would have embarrassed them almost as bad as we did. My point is that they are proof we don't need to expand this thing. If the #4 team gets obliterated like that, what do we think the #8 team is bringing to the table???

Go back to your playhouse. We'll call you when we need you.

Poor argument
The #4 seed has already won the CFP twice, and both of those times it was extremely controversial that they even got in. So basically, the eventual national champion came extremely close to being left out of the CFP in both of those seasons.
That’s a pretty strong argument for expanding the playoff, not keeping the status quo.
(Also, another interesting point is that LSU is the first #1 seed to ever win the CFP this past year)
