I don't buy them often, but I just saw a place advertising. 50 bucks for a dozen #1 crabs. Is that a fair price right now?

That’s just stupid good. Richard’s sells a boiled #1 for $15-18 a piece...and they run out before non-old people eat dinner.
I’d question if they’re #1s.

I was at the Westwego seafood lot just this past Saturday and they had lots of live crabs for sale.
#1's were going for $25 a dozen then prices went down to $16 for medium and $12-14 for the smallest ones, depending on which seafood dealer you talked to.
I ran into a booth selling 30 med. and 30 slightly smaller ones for $60 and opted for that. Mixed male and female, no kites.
Three of us ate our fill over the next couple days and picked the rest and wound up with about 1/2 lb. of lump and 1/2 lb. of claw meat for the freezer.

Just goes to show you some people have more money than sense to pay that for 1 crab.

That place is a shithole, no one is going there to waste money. Apparently they’re just monsters, and cooked on point. It’s not even an inside establishment, technically it’s a patio restaurant.

A friend shared it on Facebook. Some place in Alexandria. She asked me if I knew whether it was a fair price.
What exactly is a #1 crab? Are they all males?

#1 s are all male and at least 5 1/2” from tip to tip

Can be either sex as far as I'm concerned since I like the females for the fat in the shells.
Number 1 crabs are the largest most full crabs you can get----usually around 6+ inches from point to point.
Some folks prefer the males since they are a bit easier to pick the meat out of them, but like I said, I love the fat and eggs of the females.

I’d venture to say there are NO #1 crabs in Alexandria. Not even close.
This a crab from Richards according to the internet.

Why does it always have to be 5 1/2 inches?

Theres 4 grades of crabs, #1, #2, #3 or factory, and females.
#1 crabs, are Male Crabs, hard shelled and missing no legs or claws. Over 6" point to point
#2 are all of the above except they would be over 5" point to point
#3 crabs are females, or a #1 or #2 by size that's either skinny or missing legs or a claw
Females are female crabs that have eggs
Theres one other grade, straight dump, that's when you buy from a crabbers and they dump everything in a lug and dont grade them.
