Heading to Sanibel Island in a couple of weeks with our kids who love looking for shells/starfish/sand dollars. I'm sure we'll spend most of our time at the beach but I've never been to that part of Florida. Anything else worth checking out / day trip ideas. We'll be staying at the Sundial resort.

We had the best luck with seashells at Blind Pass Beach. Loved Sanibel when we were there.

Did this trip with family a few years ago. Loved the trip and it holds some special memories for my family.
With that, here is some notables:
Actually stayed at the Sundial. Was ok, nothing special. Dont expect the beaches to be like Destin/Pensacola as the sand is mixed with a lot of shell fragments.
Rent some bikes. The bike shop where we rented was just under a mile away from the Sundial. Aside from a couple of trips, the car stayed parked and we biked for most of the trip.
The shelling was awesome. We found the best spot by far to be at the Blind Pass public beach. When the tide turned, the shells rolled in.
Ate at the Bubble Room on Captiva. The fish in the bag was excellent and make sure to save some room for the Orange Crunch Cake.
Pinnochio's Ice Cream, which is now "Sanibel's Best Ice Cream", try the Sandpiper flavor.
We also had brunch one morning at the Island Cow which is near some shopping areas for the shoppers in your group.
The Ding Darling Wildlife trail was also a good hike with wildlife and signts.
