May need to fly out there in mid August/early September to visit family. Trying to get the "lay of the land" with recent experiences. Thanks.

Friends are in Portland on vacation right now. They said unless you go looking for protests, you don't know they are happening.

Just returned from a gold trip at Bandon Dunes - southern Oregon. I did fly in and out of Portland and stayed in a hotel there. Everyone wears a mask - nothing out of the ordinary, so a few protests.

Basically, avoid downtown. Protests are almost always there.

Cannon Beach was awesome. Not crowded.

Thank you all for the replies.
Wondering in terms of the State or National Parks, what's open or limitations?
I'd seen this recent article where Bend wants people to stay away until after Labor Day.

I was at Black Butte Ranch from July 12-July 18, about 2.5 hours southeast of Portland. Flew into Portland and got out. It was akin to if all the mess was in the French Quarter, I flew to the NOLA airport and immediately drove to Alexandria. I had a conference call 7 a.m. local time, and it was 39 degrees in Sisters. We would spend one day hiking and biking within the area and did three road trips. One to Crater Lake National Park (no limitations except if you are not staying in the Lodge, you can't go in). Crater Lake is awesome. Also did the Painted Hills. Very unique. Nothing like the wackiness going on in Portland. We went into Bend several times. The first day to get groceries, another day we just drive through going to Crater and did lunch at Monkless. Pretend you didn't see the article. I think the people want your business but might verbalize something else.

It’s a town you drive through to get to Bend.
There’s nothing worth staying for.

I think it was LSUintheNW that recommended Sparrow Bakery. Enjoyed my two visits there. The one in the market area is a lot better than the one by the railroad tracks. I didn't do a lot in Sisters per se, but Black Butte Ranch was nice in the area. I'm sure if I would have spent more time in the Bend area I would have found more things to do. It felt like 104 in LA, so that 39 degrees in Sisters felt really good. Sisters definitely ain't no Breckenridge or Vail.

Easy camping just west of town towards where the PCT is.
Oregon is just a beautiful state. I want to live in this area.

View at Black Butte Ranch, the namesake of a very solid beer.

Oh, they expanded eh? Good for them. I’ll have to check out the market area one.

Friend,
Mother and I visited Portland a few weeks ago. It's a beautiful city and Apizza Scholls is good enough to make it in Brooklyn. It's significantly better than the best pizza Chicago, which is truly a terrible pizza city, has. I do not understand why Portland is considered a mecca for donuts, such a strange reputation. Tastee Donuts in Kenner is better than anything Portland offered. Overall, Portland is a very overrated city for food.

Were you afraid to fly with someone of advanced age? Tell me more about the trip out there and what that was like. Thank you.

Friend,
Mother is 60 and at the pinnacle of health for her age range. I wore my N99 mask, and I purchased her a similar mask in February when I could see the storm clouds forming. We also wore face shields, not the type made from Sam's Club rotisserie chicken containers, but the ones for industrial workers.
I also purchased us hazmat suits. Mother refused to wear hers, but I wore mine on the plane. I suspect because I sat in the aisle seat and Mother the window seat (we flew Alaska Airlines) my suit protected her as well. We spent two days in Portland, one day in Astoria, and one day exploring the northwest coast from Seaside to Cannon Beach to Tilamook. The Tilamook guest center is not worth visiting, as you can get the same products at Sam's and some grocery stores. I went with the hope of getting to make cheese, but they did not allow me, even after I pleaded. More details will be forthcoming, but it was not nearly as interesting as my trip to Auburn.
