Right now I'm thinking about either a Lab or Golden retriever.

My boy is autistic (verbal) and from research it seemed labs and goldens pop up consistently at 1 and 2.

I've adopted a couple of dogs before but I was thinking about getting a purebred, but is there really a difference, and if so, what?

Thanks!

I have a purebred golden, great dogs. They just shed a lot. And have hip issues.

Get a Golden. You won’t regret it.

Golden retrievers are great with kids that have disabilities

My pref is goldens, just get one with parents that have had OFAs tested as well as genetic tests. A lot of the stuff is preventable if the parents have been properly tested

Goldens are the best

We adopted ours from a breeder. A lot of dogs puppies went on to be service dogs for special needs kids.

They are too smary

The little boy next door is autistic (verbal) and the parents had a difficult time finding a dog that the son liked.

They went through a number of breeds before getting a beagle. They took the boy and dog to a special trainer that worked with emotional support animals.

We got a purebred golden when my son was 5. She’s been a great dog. Yes she sheds but not the worst if you keep them groomed. They’re smart, sweet, energetic but don’t get anxiety often if it’s a quiet day. She’s almost 2 years old now.

I ran across beagles and Newfoundlands doing research. My boy is affectionate (likes hugs) but will sometimes have meltdowns and deals with sensory issues. I was thinking a sturdy and calming dog might do well for him.

I noticed goldens are expensive but assume definitely worth it. I never met one I didn't like.

Had a variety of dogs all my life, never owned a lab until I was in my 40s.
Best damned dog I’ve ever owned.

We have a wheaten terrier, and they are awesome. Hypo-allergenic, non-shedding, and I don’t think they are as hyperactive as goldendoodles. Ours is pretty energetic though they are great family dogs. They typically weigh 30-40lbs.

This is what they look like (they don’t look like most terriers)

Not sure if you’re open to other options, but GSD would be another suggestion to consider.

Walker hound is my suggestion. I have had a number of breeds, but this one was the best family pet I have ever owned.

Good luck finding what you are looking for.
