Amatuer Radio (Ham) Operators Unite

I've been interested in Ham since I was a little kid listening to Art Bell on Coast to Coast AM. I've always talked about getting my license, but never had the time. Well, today a friend of a friend that happens to be the emergency Ham operator and course teacher for our county stopped by with all of the questions and answers to the test you're required to pass in order to obtain your license and legally operate. I'm finally going to do it
Any Ham operators here? What can I expect and should I build a giant antenna in my yard to troll the Russians?

Are you in Blue Ridge? I'm not far from you if so. May catch you broadcasting with my rookie equipment

Yep, and you need to broadcast with enough power to sterilize your neighbors. When you key the mike, the streetlights should dim.

I just want to be some kind of half-assed Christian Slater Jack Burton hybrid.

I attended a school for Industrial Electronics and learned a great deal about ham and short wave and scanner radios and frequencies from my instructor. I too always intended on getting my ham license but never did. May need to revisit that idea. That said I have always had the most up to date scanner radios and currently have one with digital monitoring capabilities. Big problem is that many agencies are going encrypted and buddy you arent going to be able to monitor those. There's also a lot of fun to be had with shortwave if you have upper and lower side-band monitoring capabilities. Best wishes for success in the hobby and securing your license!
