I've recently gotten in to firearms. I bought my first pistol, a vp9sk and now I've started looking at ARs. I like the smaller barrels and that's what led me to the pistols. From what I've read you can own a AR pistol without the tax stamp? Is that correct?

size of the barrel is less important than the placement of your load.

I've several suppressed ARs, and 1 SBR, aka, Short Barrelled Rifle, aka, AR pistol, all legal.
quote:

The National Firearms Act of 1934 (NFA) defined any rifle with a shoulder stock and barrel less than 16 inches in length and 26 inches in overall length to be a "short barreled rifle" (SBR) and required a citizen to fill out a BATFE Form 4 and pay a $200 NFA Tax Stamp.
Put a shoulder stock on it and you're in violation of federal law. Not that you should be, because it's stupid, but you are.

ETA: The SBR is legal and has a stamp because it has the shoulder stock, therefore it is an actual SBR by the letter of the law.

I thought it was an SBR (short-barrelled rifle) AR that required the stamp. Isn't that why all the AR weenies buy those "hand brace" things that they're not supposed to shoulder? I think the whole point is to take an AR pistol (no stamp required) and make it a de facto SBR.

Around 2k, hopefully a little less. My plan is to buy the pistol and file for a tax stamp, so that I can put a stock on it.

.22 is fun for plinking. Just not for self defense.

I have a Sig MPC and MCX (9mm and 5,56). I have the original pistol braces but switched them to collapsible stocks nearly identical to the ones I used on my H&K MP5S in the military.

I just saw a FB post from a local range/pawn shop that has a new Q Sugar Weasel 300 BLK in. I called them to find out how much.....$1,999. MSRP is only $1,499 and there's a couple of places that have them in stock. Part of me wanted to buy, but at a $500 markup, yeah, no.

But seriously, the Q stuff is nice. Check out the Weasel and the Honey Badger.
