Looking back at the 2007 defense

Pelini's last season in his first stint at LSU was disappointing to me at the time, and partly bc of that I was kind of lukewarm about bringing him back on board. However, watching the 2007 Florida game I came to appreciate that he did not coach nearly the caliber of talent then that he will this season (crosses fingers) and in the future. No disrespect to these guys btw, but watching Rahim Alem, Pittman and co. try to tackle Teblow was almost comical. LSU's first string defense in 2007:
Glenn Dorsey: tremendously talented obviously, but was never the same after that injury. Drafted 5th overall. I'd say he had a decent pro career all things considered, but not relative to his pick
Ricky Jean-François: drafted in the 7th round, had about the career you'd expect for that
Chevis Jackson: drafted third round by the Falcons, lasted two seasons there (I forgot his only big play was a pick six of Brees)
Curtis Taylor: 7th round pick by the 49ers, saw little playing time
Luke Sanders: Undrafted Free Agent
Jonathan Zenon: UDFA
Kirston Pittman: UDFA
Ali Highsmith: UDFA
Tyson Jackson: 3rd overall pick by the Chiefs in 2007. He had a decent pro career, but not for a top-5 pick
Craig Steltz: 4th round pick by the Bears, was having a decent career before being injured
Darry Beckwith: UDFA
There were also a ton of injuries throughout the season. I'd say the defense held up pretty well all things considered that year, the Arkansas game was 7-6 at halftime and I think the patchwork defense just wore down, so I put that more on the offense.

Following Boom/Saban ers, I wasn't so impressed as some on TD these days with '05-'07 D either.

I remember thinking Pelini was much less aggressive. Maybe that had something to do with a dip in talent and we just didn't realize it at the time

But, but, Saban recruits own '07 NC

Underclassmen on that roster should've received more PT on both sides of the ball if anything. Might have finished undefeated. Drake Nevis, Keiland Williams, Richard Murphy Richard Dickson, Kelvin Shepard, Chad Jones, Jacob Cutrera, Al Woods, etc

My biggest issue with that season was it seemed like Bo did not bother to game plan much for Kentucky or Arkansas. KY really only had that QB and AR did have a Great backfield but we didn't seem to have a good plan to stop their wildcat which they had run some all year. Almost to me like he figured all we had to do was show up

3 straight #3 seasons. lots of turnovers and sacks. go back and rewatch the games. you're suffering early alzheimers.

Scoring D: 17th
Total D: 3rd
Pass D: 9th
Rush D: 12th
If this is disappointing, you must have been disappointed with every D since then as well.

Pelini’s defense struggled once Dorsey got hurt. Remember they shut down what became the number 3 team at seasons end to 7 points.
Also remember his assistants were;
Earl Lane (mediocre DL coach)
Peveto as LBer coach and split to special teams
Mallory at DB who was also mediocre
His coaching assistant talent is light years ahead with this team as well.
His defenses struggled against Arky and UK but don’t forget how many of those points came in OT.
He’s a great coach and hopefully will do well.

I like our current talent but the 2007 defense was salty. You are putting too much emphasis on pro careers. Plenty of guys that have great college careers don't match it in the NFL. Numerous variables involved like injuries, team fit, team talent. Chevis Jackson is a good example. He was never an NFL star, but was one hell of a college player. Same is true for several others you call out. Other than Stingley, CJ was as talented as any DB we have on our roster.
The AR game was frustrating, but that stable of RBs were elite, especially McFadden.

NOPE!!! Fulton and Delpit were both far better. And if you’re talking this year’s roster, we’ll have to wait for the season to play out, but I’d guess that Ricks and Flott will be better.

I don’t disagree with your point...
But dude played 10yrs in the L as a 7th rd pick
That’s not your career you expect from a 7th rd pick lol
Also, just for fun
Steltz, Highsmith, Dorsey= all Americans
Jackson, beckwith, Chevis = all sec
It wasn’t an all time great defense but certainly was a championship caliber defense

Alexander got hurt also, before his injury we were knocking opposing QBs out of the game ..

I see what you're saying, but I'd add a big caveat that using the NFL to measure/gauge talent level is incomplete. It can be a good gauge for top talent on average, but some guys can be really good college players that for one reason or another don't transition as well at the next level.
Tebow is a good example -- one of the greatest college football players ever, but didn't really have a game that translated to the NFL.

Charles Alexander should've been the next great DLineman to come out of LSU, incredible talent

D was being built prior to #1 '03, 3rd in Saban's idgaf '04.
Bo didn't start from scratch to excuse giving up so many points (given keys to a Ferrari sound familiar?)

05 had some rough moments early but was playing very well at the end. 06 was actually a really good defensive team.

So if you were a coach last year you would have started Jackson over Stingley or Fulton? I wouldn't have started him in the Nickel over Vincent either.
*Yes, Vincent had a slow start to the year. I attribute that to missed reps from track, but late in the year Vincent played damn good football.

What AU did to Dorsey with that cheapshot is one of the most disgusting things I have ever seen.... and I don’t care if it were two teams playing anywhere else. That was blatant and just puts into prospective what unsportsmanlike really means......
