There is a lot of Whitakers in MS too. Literally, not figuratively.

i believe this is far more common than the average american might think. i'm from an actual backwoods town and we had a family like this.

Those people made The Wild And Wonderful Whites of West Virginia look like fricking Downton Abbey.

That one woman sitting by the cane will appear in my next nightmare

Oh my god.
I had never heard of this before. I don't even know where to start.
Unfortunately yes, that level of poverty does still exist in Appalachia, and it is more common than most probably realize. I've seen it far too many times.
These people though... wow. Speechless. I'm from southern WV so not much surprises me, but I have so many questions and would love to know their story.
Honestly, the whole thing just made me sad for multiple reasons.

I'd hope the WV thing was an isolated thing, but I watched story on the 20 year bama prison warden and it was pretty interesting. His thoughts on the inmates sentenced to the death penalty under his watch. Very good

Southern WV. It's pretty much Va at that point.

It's somehow more horrifying than that episode
Because it's real. I think so too. It's ghastly.

These people don’t have access to OB service and they eat sugar and corn. They have 10-15lb babies. That is why they are brain damaged.

After watching that I went down a rabbit hole and found a documentary called American Hollow. It's about an Appalachian family who lives in "poverty" up in the mountains. I watched a few other videos related to that also.
I've even seen these type situations locally around here in Louisiana. There's an old mom and dad, who are God fearing, incredibly hard working, nice folks, and have a lot of kids that are straight bums. The family in American Hollow all live on a lot of land and bitch about not having any money and hate their lives. Thier 70 something y/o parents love their lives, make big gardens every year, live off the land, hunt, fish, etc to make it. But all the damn kids are in and out of jail, drunks, etc.
You'd think being raised like that they would mostly turn out to be good folks but many times just not the case. Again, I'm not talking about the Whitakers, that's fricked up shite, just other documentaries I watched from my rabbit hole this morning.

Appalachia scare the hell out of me. It is the most God forsaken area in the U.S. I hate that part of our country.

Yes Jesco White and his family are normal when compared to The Whitakers
