I thought I read that Houston hospitals were at 90% capacity. Was I just imagining that? It’s possible, I took a gnarly nap today

What capacity do you usually run your hospital at?

If anything, this shows why the one size fits all approach was a failure. Texas shutdown when the virus wasn’t really in the state, now it’s here and a second shutdown is not economically feasible.

Total COVID patient occupancy in the TMC system is at 14%. General bed usage for COVID patients is 12%. ICU usage is 27%. The latter is the more urgent piece.

As of yesterday, Houston was at 3% available ICU bed capacity, based on normal bed count. 362 beds were in use by COVID patients. There are 373 beds ready to be made available in addition to normal capacity for long term use. And an additional 504 beds ready to be made available for short term surges. General bed capacity outside of ICU beds isn't in any immediate danger.

In other words, there is ICU capacity for 3x more COVID patients, assuming no discharges, before shite really gets bad.
