This is for older Tiger fans but I distinctly remember one of SI's regular writers recommending that LSU quit fooling around and hire Joe Dean immediately as Athletic Director. At this time Jo-Jo was a basketball analyst for Jefferson-Pilot Sports and a rep for Converse shoes

I don't remember which writer it was (Dr. Z? Frank DeFord? some other name I can't recall?) but at the time SI was THE definitive coverer of sports. Nothing; ESPN, The Sporting News, Sport magazine, nothing, came close to the prestige or influence of Sports Illustrated.

I remember when I first read it I, based upon my respect for and trust in Sports Illustrated (and that writer, whom it kills me that I can't remember his name), thought it was a good idea and was all for it.

Within a year or two of this article it actually came to fruition and LSU hired Joe Dean and he proceded to frick up just about everything he touched.

Do any of you other old-timers remember this article and whom the author was?

Me too! Joe Dean was the worst. He was an arrogant arse, as well.

Circa 1987 I saw Joe Dean one night on a pay phone at a Circle K near the corner of Lee Drive near Highland. There used to be one next door or very near the Billy Heromans flower shop there on Lee. Joe was absolutely ripping somebodies arse for leaving a light on at the football stadium. He went on and on. I kept thinking about that poor person on the end of that tongue lashing. My only up close experience with joe “string music” Dean. One phone call doesn’t make the man but he certainly had certainly mastered the fine art of ripping someone a new one.

In his defense he was way more than a “rep” at Converse, his son Mark although was a rep there. Joe signed some pretty impressive endorsement deals at Converse. He seemed to know everyone but placed way too much importance on others opinion look no further than Gil Brandt of the Cowboys infamously telling Joe “ hire Curley Hallman and never look back”

That might be it. That is a familiar name but it was so long ago. So you remember the article as well? Do you have any other info? Thanks.

You are a low life idiot. Joe Dean was a gentleman who was hired to get the athletic department out of the "red" financially. He did that. Currently, LSU athletics is in "hoc" to such a high amount that 1 or 2 bad seasons of football would be devastating. All of this is hidden behind the glitter of a football national championship, but it is true. It is carefully hidden among the many pages of TAF's financial records. This thread has no purpose except to smear the good name of a former AD who is deceased. Why would you post such a thread? Why would you want to do this to his family (who are great LSU fans and probably read TD)? Why would you inflict pain on Joe Dean's family after his passing?

I said it in the other thread and I'll say it again here, a strong argument can me made that Joe Dean did more to harm LSU athletics than any other singular individual in history.

First of all, frick you.

Second of all, I'm sure he was a wonderful man but he still sucked as an AD. If he had to pinch pennies it was because HE failed to raise the money necessary.

Thirdly, IDGAF how in hock (learn to fricking spell) the athletic department is. We just won a Natty, our third since the gentleman in question left.

So in hock that when USA Today looked at everyone's balance sheet from 2005 to present (link below), LSU finished in the black every single year.

You are also an idiot. This graph means nothing because most of the LSU Athletic Department's debt has been transferred to TAF (which your graph does not show).

Then why attack a deceased AD? An attack that hurts his family. What purpose does this serve?

Someone on the 6th floor told me the amount of debt is so large that 1 or 2 bad football seasons would require draconian budget cuts. You don't see these things because it is all submerged in the TAF financial records.

Pretty much checked out of LSU athletics during that period and have no clue if Joe Dean was good, bad or indifferent as AD.

My time with Joe Dean and his family were through my parents (they attended and competed at LSU at the same time) and Lakeside Oaks basketball camp and I have nothing but fond memories as a youth. Met Pete and Press, Apple Sanders, Danny Hester and Fig Newton.

Have read numerous accounts of Joe Dean and have no reason to dispute but as for me and my family - he and his will always be dear to us.

According to YOU. Even "IF" this were true, what is the purpose of this thread? Why is this "opinion" necessary right now? Why smear the name of a deceased former AD? Why is it necessary to stomp on his grave and destroy his family's memory of him?
