Why can’t people just acknowledge that ‘things were different’

In this obsession by BLM to ‘move forward’, they are super concerned with the past.
I think we can all agree slavery was wrong. The Civil War was a fricked up time.
It’s pathetic that people are obsessing over an event that happened that long ago. Why are we incapable of moving on until these things are erased? That’s bullshite. If racism has always been a problem, why did athletes play last year? And the decades prior? NOW we are supposed to topple more statues, cleanse the history books, remove school songs?
If you are triggered by a 100 year old song, I pity you. Why can’t people just acknowledge it was a dark time in our history, and we’ve learned from it.
People are horrible for what they did in the 1800’s? Even if it was a societal norm? This makes absolutely no sense.

Because money. That’s why they played that’s why life goes on. If Sports were being played right now, none of this would be a big thing like it is.

Becuase people do not know History, they hav to have something to complain about
Posted on 6/12/20 at 9:44 pm to TexasTiger08
Most people wouldn’t give a frick if the media weren’t telling them they had to.

Because being a victim is easier than actually working your arse off. They hate wealthy white people who are successful.

I mean, taking down statues does nothing. It just gives this vocal minority more of an excuse to not know shite.

Because people have no idea what the term zeitgeist means.

Is this the thread where we pretend that the civil war ended, and then blacks and whites hugged in the streets? Gonna just pretend that blacks weren't terrorized, that Jim Crow didn't happen, and that a big chunk of white people didn't fight against basic civil rights for blacks, kicking and screaming, the entire time, definitely well into the 1960s and 1970s, and some to the current day?
You'd almost believe that black people are trying to say that their current situation was caused by events that happened in the past or something!

I didn’t say anything about the ‘60’s and ‘70’s. I specifically mentioned a song (The Eyes of Texas), and monuments dedicated to the Civil War. It was a part of society in the South for rich whites to have slaves at work.
It’s a part of history that needs to be known. It’s important to know what went wrong so it isn’t repeated.
Shame on you for reading more into my post than was there. Stay on topic.

Lol, I responded to exactly what you wrote.
And the monuments weren't put up as a cautionary tale; they were installed, in part, to lionize and glorify the Lost Cause.

Yes, it should be known so it can’t be repeated. But that can be accomplished in history books.
We don’t need monuments and songs glorifying that shameful time
ETA: Saying “things were just different” is also total bullshite. Owning other humans as property has always been pretty shitty. So things weren’t that different. People were just being shitty

I sort of agree, but it goes both ways. I don’t know how these people feel when they see or hear these things. Just let it ride and hope we come out better on the other end. I don’t let it bother me.

No, you redirected to a completely different era.

So should sons and daughters of the Confederacy not be proud of their heritage? It’s a problem when you start erasing ancestors. I think going down that rabbit hole would lead you to some dangerous tribes in Africa. Perhaps ancestors of these African tribes (regardless of how far back we need to trace roots) should also be brought to the forefront.

Why should they? Their ancestors were treasonous and fought to preserve a pretty shitty way of life

Has anyone asked to cleanse the history books?
If anything they’ve been pretty white washed.

There’s no need for you to be ignorant. It’s too easy to sit here in 2020 and judge what was right and wrong in the 1800’s and prior. Slavery was an everyday part of life in damn near every continent. Who do you think built the Pyramids? Geez...we outta knock those things down. Yes?

both sides come off poorly
on one hand, you have the BLM side saying everything is soooo horrible and unfair, which is obviously silly.
on the other, the civil rights act was signed less than 60 years ago. many of the first black people to do xyz are still alive. most black people have living relatives who had to deal with really horrible shite... and you have people from very privileged backgrounds telling them to stfu about the social injustice and atrocities that happened not all that long ago.
things aren't so black & white. no pun intended

I am very confident in my belief that having slaves was wrong, even in the time of the pyramids. Great thing about society, we evolve and become enlightened. And we realize that our ancestors did some fricked up shite sometimes.
Just because people maybe didn’t realize they were being shitty, doesn’t mean they weren’t being shitty.

Factory work must have been glorious.
