I would say it's the complete opposite.
Growing up I probably watched Airplane 100 times. Stupid comedies are the epitome of rewatch.
It's the 3 hour epics like Lawrence that you have to put in the work.
I've never heard someone say, I've watched Dumb and Dumber, Caddyshack, Animal House, Coming to America, Trading Places, Vacation once.
But Deer Hunter, Deliverance, Doctor Zhivago, Apocalypse Now, those type of movies you hear people say they saw it once.

The problem with newer movies is that I watch'em once, but they'll come on t.v. later on and I'll catch at least part of it. Does that count as watching again? I say it doesn't.
Some that do come to mind are...
- Joker
- Saving Private Ryan
- American Sniper
- Pan's Labyrinth
- Amelie
- The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance

Saving private Ryan and Schindler’s list. Both great movies.

Schindler's List
Leaving Las Vegas (I loved it, but man I just can't bring myself to watch it again)

Ok long shot here but has anyone else ever seen a Japanese movie called “Peking watermelon or Beijing watermelon”? I saw it on tv once then never again. It’s about a grocery store owner that has a spoiled family and he befriends some Chinese exchange students who have no money. It’s amazing.

Straw Dogs-the original, don’t really care to watch it again anytime soon though

This is what immediately came to mind for me.
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas also falls into the same category.

always watch a great movie at least twice. The exception is Schindler's List. I only needed to see it once. Masterpiece but a hard watch.
I tried to rewatch a few times. Never made it very far. It’s tough.

American Sniper. Once is enough for me on that one. Good movie though.

Comedies are generally a one and done, unless it’s something in the background or showing a friend the movie kinda thing.
Great comedies tend to be the most rewatchable genre. You can have Dumb and Dumber on repeat and I’ll almost always be in the mood for it.

Chinatown
I got to the end of it and was sooo pissed that the movie just ended after "Forget it Jake, It's Chinatown. One of my all time favorites though

Two themes I've noticed throughout most of the answers, older "classic" movies people watch because they feel they need to and movies that are extremely heavy and take a toll on you emotionally or mentally.
