Lightning bugs or Fireflies?

A neighbor and I were cartoonishly arguing about what you call Lampyridae.
I said the bugs were Lightning Bugs and my neighbor said the bugs were Fireflies, we went back and forth like Looney Tunes before we just agreed to disagree.
My neighbors are from Oklahoma and the place that I had encountered Lightning Bugs the most was Alabama. Caught mason jars full at the grandparents while growing up.
What does the O-T call these bugs?

Lightning bugs
Are they making a comeback? For awhile they were disappearing, used to love to chase them as a kid.

Yes because we aren’t destroying the natural habitat with all that mosquito abatement bullshite.

Not sure honestly, I don’t see them where I’m at. Mosquito sprayers might kill them, read something about them possibly going extinct.

Man, that brings back some real old memories. We called them Lightning bugs then. It's been 50+ years I'm thinking since I saw one.

Lightning bugs.
Those things are cool. Haven't seen one in a long time.

I’m assuming you neighbor is from the north or maybe the Carolinas? Never heard of someone in the south callling them anything other than lightning bugs.

I saw some in the yard last summer. Stood outside awhile until there were 7 or 8 of them flashing. It felt oddly satisfying, knowing the planet wasn't as fricked up as previously thought.

I call them fireflies. That being said, my grandparents were from NYC and Philadelphia and the first time I saw them was visiting cousins in NJ. Everyone else I know calls them lightening bugs
