I finished the Expanse a while back and haven't found a show to scratch the itch since. Online I've seen Kill Joys and Dark Matter suggested as some more modern, space-based shows. Anyone here watched one of these or have any other to recommend?

There’s honestly not a lot of good SciFi space based shows out there right now besides The Expanse, which is disappointing.

Expanse, and it makes me worried that it'll go woke or do some nonsensical hard turn to undo the awesome so far.
I bailed out of Westworld at the end of season 1.
Tried Altered Carbon, and ep 1 just isn't selling me.

I liked Altered Carbon S1 but the disappointment of westworld and bad reviews for AC S2 just left me empty. I finished all the Expanse books to fill the void but now I am not sure what to watch.

I'm in the same boat. The Expanse was really the first space show I've watched since the original Star Trek when it was on the air. When I finished The Expanse, I tried to find more. About a quarter of an episode of Farscape was all I got through.
I'm part of the way through the 5th episode of Defiance, but it's a little silly for my tastes. I've been watching it for at least three weeks, and that's as far as I've gotten.
Maybe I should just dive into all of the Star Trek's since the original.
I've never seen more than a couple of episodes of any of them.

Obviously it’s not current. But can’t possibly let a SCI-FI thread go without giving a shout of to Stargate SG1

Seasons 4 and 7 are some of the best of any show. Season 9 is surprisingly strong too, which is disappointing how the show ended.
Atlantis seemed to also really hit its stride after the second season. I feel it’s cancellation was due to them pouring resources into SGU, which was a dud.

Devs was pretty good.

Killjoys and Dark Matter ended.

I gave up on Dark Matter after about 4 episodes. Devs is great.
You try Travelers on Netflix? Not quite the whole space travel thing, but sci-fi.

The Expanse by a wide margin.
Killjoys was really good despite last season that was being a bit of a let-down IMO. Unfortunately it's no longer "current" (unless I've missed the announcement of another season sometime in the future).
I recently binged Beforeigners and absolutely loved it. Looking forward to what's ahead as it's refreshingly creative.
Throw Agents of S.H.E.I.L.D. into the mix as well... although it's too early in the new season to determine how it will stack up vs. the others. This show has been pretty good overall - with 2 seasons I'd consider outstanding (actually 1/2 of 2 different seasons plus another entire season. Yet I digress...).
ETA:
Forgot about Star Trek Discovery. Took me almost the whole 1st season to warm up to it but 2nd season won me over.
I miss Travellers.
...and Farscape.
...and Fringe.
ETA2:
A couple shows that DO NOT qualify as "serious" science fiction:
For those who don't mind Sci-Fi that's heavy on comedy - I HIGHLY recommend the 1st Season of Future Man. There's a steep drop-off in quality the entirety of Season 2... rebounding slightly Season 3... but nowhere near S1 overall.
Also thought Upload had a strong 1st season and look forward to more.

I loved Dark Matter and thought it deserved more seasons. For being a Sci-fi original it’s pretty good. I just finished Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. I thought it was pretty good, but no not modern I suppose. The Orville is great but only has two seasons at the moment and is moving to Hulu. You could watch Human which aired on AMC. It’s modern and has an interesting take on android consciousness.

I see we have different tastes. Hope I still dig the show. I missed Hopkins as a star in s2 but other then that. I liked dare loved it
But I mean s2 was really good imo whether 1 is your 2 is good no matter what jmo
They should both be watched before any opinion is made

DARK is one of the greatest shows ever. @me. I don't care. It's fantastic.
For me the best Sci-Fi TV right now is:
1. The Expanse
2. DARK
Way down below: everything else.
