That Savage Stevens 320 or a Mossberg Maverick 88 would get you the ability to sling some 12ga ammo for around $200. You could go get a mossberg 500 at Walmart for $254 although that would have a 28” barrel with 3 chokes. If you had any use for the gun for hunting, that would be better than a short barrel “home defense” model.
Some will tell you that you need a short barrel for home defense. That might be “better” or more “tactical”, but do you really see yourself hunting through your house room by room? If you are barricading yourself from an intruder, an extra 10 inches of barrel isn’t going to make much difference. Your gun will look a lot less scary to the jury too.

I don't disagree, and it's my personal tool of choice, but I understand the limitations.
For example, when you round a corner with a long gun, if it's up an at the ready, the barrel is the first thing in the room. A bad guy standing behind the portal can easily reach out and push the muzzle away from him. Remember the 5 "D's" of personal defense (Distance, deflect, distract, disarm, disable). This one is deflect. If the weapon is a a low ready to defeat the deflect, then it takes time to bring it up to a position where it's ready for you to get into the fight. With good technique(s), this isn't an issue with a hand gun.
Additionally, even with a high capacity magazine tube (8 on a shot gun, a reload takes a significant amount of time/effort. A reload with a semi-auto handgun (or carbine type rifle) is rapid. FWIW, in most gun fights that we are speaking of, they are over before one needs to reload.

If you need fore than 5 with a shotgun, you're doing something terribly wrong. Your accuracy and damage is much higher than using a handgun.

If you are reloading in a home invasion situation then things have gone really really bad, whether it’s a pistol or shotgun.
Or, you messed with the wrong people (or the wrong people messed up their addresses)

Depend on what the wall is made of, even #8 birdshot will go through sheetrock followed by wood siding. Plenty of YouTube videos showing penetration levels of various shotgun loads.

Well, it's certainly not evidence that Mossberg makes shitty products. The Mossberg 590A1 was the only shotgun that met all of the military's specs and passed its stress test. Why don't you explain to us how the Mossberg isn't a good gun?

I agree with both of you, but still feel like it needs to considered in the decision making process. As I said my my original post, I personally feel like the best solution is a shotgun/pistol combination.

Most home invasions happen between two and five feet, if you're looking for home defense your best bet is a pistol with some good hollow points.
I don't know where this shotgun for home defense shite started but it's pretty dumb to have to swing 3 feet of weapon in a small space. No, the sound of you racking a shell won't scare someone breaking into your home. It'll probably get you shot quicker.
You could buy an SBR I suppose (that's what I'd recommend if you're set on the shotgun route) but it's still not as effective as a laser/flashlight combo on an 11+1 loaded with Hornady critical defense.
Also: HIDDEN DOES NOT MEAN SECURE. LOCK YOUR shite UP.

if you're not a big dude, then Mossberg maverick 20 ga, take the plug out and load it with heavy dove load. It's got a tight pattern, it's not heavy which makes it easy to grab and aim in the dark, and the pellets won't go putting a bunch of holes through your walls and end up hitting someone you're trying to protect. If you're a bigger dude then go with a Remington 870 super mag 12 ga. for all the same reasons as above, it's just a little heavier, if you're a big guy you don't want to be swinging a lighter gun up too fast in the dark and shooting your ceiling.

I feel like it would depend heavily upon the size and layout of your home. If you live in a 400 sq. ft. shack with no extended lines of sight, then maybe a shotgun wouldn't make sense. A shotgun makes sense for my "normal" sized home, though. FWIW, I keep a 9mm in the nightstand and my Mossberg nearby. My wife knows how to use them and we have no kids to worry about.

Worst advice in the thread. OP whatever you do, don't listen to this.
You'll get lots of different opinions, but I'll say if you are hellbent on a shotgun then get a Remington 870 or Mossberg 590 and load up with 00 buckshot.
With that said, shotguns are extremely effective but not the most user friendly weapon, especially for someone who doesn't shoot. There is massive recoil, your magazine capacity is limited, and reloading - especially under stress - takes a lot of time.
A better solution is an AR15, and again just keep it simple. Buy an off the shelf rifle from either Daniel Defense or BCM. Either a 14.5" with a pinned and welded muzzle device, or a 16". Load up with regular 55 gr ball, and bring it to the range until you're very comfortable with the operation of the weapon.
If you have children, keep the rifle readily accessible and lock away a few loaded magazines where the kids cannot get to them.
ETA: Here I'll make it even more simple for you. Get this. Just add a rear site, and if you want to get really fancy, a red dot and rail mounted flashlight.
Listen to this man. 14.5 Pinned unless you sbr. Then add a sling and white light. Red dot if you’re feeling frisky. Become competent with it, and then relax knowing you have 99.9 percent of social disturbances covered.

I have an Remi 870.
extended tube/ghost ring sights/light/breaching choke (hard to use 2 hands for long gun and hold light)
I've heard newer 870s are garbo, can't confirm. Mine is older, but has been solid tool.
I recommend OB as well.

Meh. No hearing protection until 21 fixed that from ever being an issue.
