It’s warm but not over 90 yet. What should I hit my lawn with that’s has a mix of weeds? I know there’s a few mounds of crab grass, not sure what the other stuff is off hand. Weed free zone I see has one with 24d and one with atrazine. MSM turf. Celsius. Mix of some? I put down a pre emergent earlier this year but haven’t started for weeds.

I’m always gonna say Celsius. I was thinking today about grass and weeds. I’ve adopted a new sort of approach. St aug is yellow-did you apply fungicide and peat moss? You did! Did you do it again?
Bermuda isn’t doing well-did you fert it? You did! Did you do it again?
Weeds-did you spray Celsius? You did! Did you spray it again?

That right there will fix about 75% of your problems.

Ronk.. I saw in another thread you mentioned a mix of Celsius and MSM as a powerful combo against weeds

I spoy sprayed MSM 6 weeks ago and it did great

I sprayed Celsius 2 weeks ago (only on dallisgrass areas) and is doing well... its purple and stunted

Can I mix the 2 this weekend and get after it?? Surfactant or no??

Yes, assuming you only sprayed the dallisgrass with Celsius and not all the other weeds. Surfactant is a yes. If you have bermuda you can spray the dallisgrass again.

What kind of rates are you doing the celsius?

I have tif so I did .34 oz in a 3 gallon backpack. St aug/centipede I’d start at .2 ounces

Is a backpack sprayer the only way to apply Celsius? I have never used it before.

What fungaside do you recommend? Didn’t apply any yet but not sure I have anything currently. I do get brown patch bad every year in the fall usually.

Peat moss? Never did that...any more intel on that?

I have some spots growing good and some spots not doing squat.

Thanks.

Backpack/handcan isn't the only way to apply Celsius. You can use a tank and spray at 1 or 2 gallons a minute or use a tractor with a boom sprayer. Mixing anything other than a backpack gets expensive though. The 2G rate for Celsius is 10oz per 300 gallons of water. If you have a 10k square foot yard you'll apply 20 gallons of product. If you do that twice per year it is more costly.

Two fungicides I like are propiconizole and azoxystrobin. Propiconizole for leaf spot and azoxystrobin for patch fungus.

St Aug will become chlorotic is soil with a ph above 7.5. Also, it has a greater chance to develop take all patch. By applying peat moss (ph of around 4.4) you can prevent chlorosis and supress take all patch.

I was thinking about trying Celsius to stunt my dallisgrass in hopes that it would allow my St Aug to take it over. But I’ve read a lot on the topic, and pretty much everyone says that the dallisgrass just comes back after a few weeks. The cost doesn’t seem worth it to me. So I’m thinking of just going with Roundup and paintbrush. My yard is already not in top shape, so what’s a few brown spots for a few weeks?

ETA: After a bit more reading, Allyn Hane (Lawn Care Nut) says that Celsius will kill dallisgrass with multiple applications. 3-4 treatments 3 weeks apart in the fall. 1 teaspoon per gallon of water and spot spray.

So one of my coworkers said he’d go half on a bottle of Celsius with me this fall cause he has some to treat as well. And it looks like a little bit goes a long way, so half a bottle should be plenty for each of us.

I have a backpack sprayer I was just used to the hose end sprayer type like the weed free zone stuff. My yard is about 9k so I will have to loook into how much it would take.

I'll look up those fungicides too. I have only used the scotts fungus stuff via my spreader. Doesn't seem to work that well but i may be doing something else wrong.

I really need to get my soil tested to see, never have.

So I will say this. The over application of just about anything will kill anything. The amount of Celsius required to kill dallisgrass is going to severely injure if not kill the lawn. Try mixing Celsius and sedgehammer and spraying that on the dallisgrass.

Well, I’m so fed up with dallisgrass I’ve been spot spraying glyphosate. So I’m thinking I’ll take my chances.

Good to know. I downloaded Allyn’s 2019 lawn guide last year. Give me a little bit and I’ll pull the screen shots for what he says about Celsius and dallisgrass and maybe you can clarify it for me.

ETA: This is the section where he talks about Celsius. Right here he says 2-3 applications.

This part is in a section where he talks about a different herbicide. Dismiss apparently suppresses dallisgrass, goose grass, torpedo grass, and kills sedges. But apparently he thinks Celsius is better for dallisgrass in Bermuda.

So I’m actually not sure if he’s saying it’ll kill it, or just suppress it.

Celsius is great on grassy weeds. The effects on dallisgrass suppression are legit. I’m not sure if Mr Hane is saying that Celsius will kill dallisgrass but in my opinion if it does then you’ll have serious issues with surrounding grass. Celsius is made by Bayer and currently the best dallisgrass control is tribute total. It’s a combination of Celsius, sedgehammer, and revolver. Even that takes 2 applications and that will kill at aug centipede on the first app. If Celsius could kill dallisgrass then I think you’d see Bayer investing in marketing dollars in promoting it.

I will say that the lawn care nut started at Trugreen so he got the best training in inferring things without actually saying them.

I do believe he is very good and obviously knows a ton about lawn care.

I have been using fungus control, And it’s none of the mentioned stuff.

I think I am going to have my soil tested before I do anything drastic. I have a bunch of bottles of hose end sprayer spectracide weed stop with 24D that I may just use up for now while I wait for test results. It’s been in my garage for a year or two. Good idea?

I don’t think I’d use products containing 2,4 D at current temperatures - good chance you could damage your desirable lawn grass. The label on the Spectricide may/should tell what temperature it can be safely used. Personally, I’d save the products for use in the fall, even late winter/early spring (Feb/March).
