Just as Harrison Ford carried two blockbuster franchises during the 1980s (Star Wars & Indiana Jones), Bale will be carrying two in the current decade (Batman & Terminator).

Bale could soon be the biggest (most bankable) movie star in the world. Who else can challenge him? There are very few worthy contenders.....but here are a few:

Will Smith
Matt Damon
Brad Pitt

"has-beens"
Cruise
Hanks
Ford

Hanks still has the biggest star power IMO. So he is not a has been. The other two, I'll agree with.

The only difference that I see is that Bale is really not that good of an actor. He's not terrible, mind you, but he kinda has that forced feeling like Keanu but not as terrible.

But does it really take much acting to play terminator or batman?

you and redneck are like peas and carrots.

That's it. It takes absolutely no skill whatsoever to play either role.

Probably not. But he was solid in American Psycho.

I agree he does have that "forced" thing about him but he has some skills none the less.

Will Smith is still the biggest star in the world IMO. I think like his last 8 movies in a row have gone over 100 million. Everything the guy touches turns to gold. I'm sure Bale will continue to also do some wierd/indy style films also, which could end up hindering him to the mainstream.

Right now i would put him #2 behind Smith, but Will has hurt himself by doing a ton of shitty movies (or just mediocre)

At first i just thought that Bale was talented but not an incredible actor, but if you want to see HIS skill, watch:

310 to YUMA (badass accent)
American Pyscho
Reign of Fire (badass accent)
etc....

The guy isn't just out of this world talented. He IS one of, if not the greatest, young actor in the business.

Like I have said in other threads, let something happen before you comment on its effects.

maybe...let's wait and see.

Will Smith is not a contender; he is gold. Everything that he has touched since 1987 has been big.

Pitt is a joke

Damon is okay.

Cuise is a moron and a freak. Because of that, I cannot see his films.

Hanks is still strong.

Ford has a movie that is still in theaters. It has grossed 313 million dollars domestically and another 400+ million oversees. How is he a hasbeen?

Whoa, Bale making the newest Terminator is not the same as "carrying a franchise," especially if you're comparing him to Harrison Ford.

Also, Arnold carried the Terminator franchise.

And of all the people in this thread, Will Smith is the "biggest movie star" by far, especially in terms of bankable actors.

Also, Tom Hanks is a has-been?

I'll give you Ford. And Cruise, though not like he used to be, is still a decent draw I would imagine.

Eh, probably not. Will Smith is in a different league than Christian Bale as far as "movie star" power. Pitt's a bigger movie star. Hanks is a bigger movie star. Denzel is likely a bigger movie star.

I don't think franchises like this give you star power just because you're in them. That would be like saying Tobey Maguire is a movie star because the Spider-Man movies did well.

Yeah, I forgot about Denzel....

I'm not so sure Tom Hanks still isn't up there in the top 3.

Smith
Hanks
Washington?

I disagree.

I think Toby Maguire was a movie star before SM, and the SM series has vaulted him into pretty large status. Because is the THE star of the franchise. I won't debate his acting ability with you, but that oesn't change the fact that TM = Spiderman.

Not really. Maguire's only other $100 million movie other than the Spider-Man movies is Seabiscuit. Before Spider-Man, his movies included the Wonder Boys, the Cider House Rules, Ride With The Devil and Pleasantville...none of which tore down the world.

You could have put anybody in the Spider-Man suit and made a ton of money. The Spider-Man character sold those movies, not Tobey Maguire.

To me, Will Smith is in a league of his own.

People go see movies because of Will Smith. People don't really go see movies BECAUSE Christian Bale is Batman.

I think a point of note also (kinda related to my last post) is that especially with the comics movies, it's more about the characters than the actors portraying them.

Tobey Maguire is Spiderman, and is a huge star as a result of it, but people were gonna see SM no matter who played the lead role. I think the same is true with Batman, though Bale is a better actor.

People are going to see Hancock in droves because Hancock IS Will Smith, and not the other way around. That's what puts him in a league all by himself.
