The Atlanta Track Club bought time and considered going to great lengths to stage The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Peachtree Road Race as an in-person race. However, the coronavirus’ continued pervasiveness claimed another landmark sporting event. Initially delayed from its customary July 4 date to Thanksgiving Day in hopes that COVID-19 would have been under better control, the Peachtree now will be run solely in a virtual setting.
“We’ll do so with mixed emotions, but we’ll do it knowing that this is going to be the safest route and also the route that delivers the most authentic Peachtree possible,” track club executive director Rich Kenah told the AJC.
The long-standing Atlanta tradition will no longer be an event featuring 60,000 runners and walkers making their way through the streets, cheered on by a mass of spectators. Instead, participants will design a 6.2-mile course of their choosing with the use of an app and run on Thanksgiving. The track club will create the app that will enable participants to track their times and measure their performance against other finishers.

The coronavirus pandemic has necessitated the postponement of an Atlanta Independence Day tradition that is practically synonymous with the holiday. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Peachtree Road Race, which has been run down Peachtree Street on every Fourth of July since its inception in 1970, has been pushed back to Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 26.
“The guidance was as follows,” Atlanta Track Club executive director Rich Kenah told the AJC. “That, despite the fact that the curves may look good on July 4, there is just not enough information at this time, not enough testing, and the medical community just would not be comfortable with bringing thousands of people together so quickly.”

It's one thing to schedule a race on Thanksgiving, quite another to reschedule a race to Thanksgiving.

This is stupid. If there is a second wave, it is more likely to start building in October/November. More people certainly are sick at that time, with flu season getting started.
I think keeping it on the 4th but better spacing out the starting groups would be a better idea than moving it to late November.

So from mid summer to Flu season?

Just a nice way of saying this race isn’t going to happen.

I wouldn’t be surprised if it did eventually get canceled (especially if a second wave happens)

A second wave inevitable.
There will probably a 3rd wave also.

Atlanta’s Peachtree Road Race postponed from July 4th to Thanksgiving
Be interesting to see what they do with the Thanksgiving Half Marathon and 5 K that they normally have.

There are going to be gathering size limits all summer
The likely outcome is simply no mass participation events all year. I'm hopeful some small, local races can happen, but that's about it.

An email I got from the Atlanta Track Club this morning said those have been cancelled.

What kind of numbers are we talking about here?

If that race changes from July 4th to Thanksgiving, there's going to be a lot of course records with the cooler temps!

the elite runners start so early that it is usually still an ideal temperature when they have it in July. It might actually be to cold and hurt times for them

They could move start times back a bit but as long as its not below low 30s...the cold isnt an issue and with the first 2 miles downhill..they can still be plenty fast while getting warm/ into a rhythm

virtual races suck, but not surprising it was cancelled/moved to virtual. The Twin Cities marathon is the first weekend in October and they moved it virtual a few weeks ago

So people are paying money to “go for a run?”
