I don't need a fancy high end one, I'm just looking for one that works consistently for general obedience training. My dog is a good friendly dog, but is big. He loves people and he always wants to go greet anyone walking by our house if I ever have him in the garage with me. Him being big can be intimidating to people who dont kow him obviously. I bought this one recently, but it didn't always work.

As you’ve learned, if you’re using an e-collar for something like you’re describing, it’s worth spending money on a decent collar so you know it’s going to consistently work when you press the button. That’s the primary difference between cheap collars and good ones. You can get a base model Sport Dog for $150ish and they’re very good collars.

"Recommend a shock collar for me"

I'd recommend trying to find another way to correct your bad habits...I tried my dogs shock collar on myself one time and that shite hurt....maybe you can talk to a professional and they can help you quit whatever it is you want to shock out of your system???

I don't have a recommendation....my Lab loves her shock collar....she behaves pretty good when its on the shelf but when its on and she knows she can enjoy a good jolt anytime she wants....she will want one on the regular. She is a kinky bitch.....I think she has some chessie or English pointer in her gene pool because she is a pointing lab and hard headed as hell....

Dogtra is excellent, have I have 3 2 dog sets over the last 16 years. Nothing but good things to say about a collar that can keep on ticking when attached to hunting GSPs. They take abuse, water, etc with no issues.

Sounds like it worked. What brand and model was it?

I bought one on Amazon for $40 to try it out and see how my dog reacts. I live along a highway and don't want to be constantly worried. He's done really well and I'm only using the beeping and vibration mode to get his attention. After only a few days I can let him out my house and he won't take off running toward the highway. I can verbally correct him and he listens.

I bought this cheap one last year and it works well. The distance they say it will work at is highly exaggerated though.

Stick with garmin or dogtra, bottom models will serve you well. Order from gundogsupply.com and read/watch the instructions on use.
Would go through entire obedience sequence for best results long term.
You only need to teach sit, “Stay” is redundant so leave it out.
Here/Heal/Sit are all you need.
Let us know how it goes with updates please.

It did! I learned my lesson. It is one that is branded by Gundogsupply but it is made by Sportdog. I don't think they are selling their own brand any longer but the Sportdog is still available...

Oh yes...it worked like a charm on me! I am no longer curious if they hurt the dog LOL...I am assuming they do given how badly it hurt me....but it does beg the question why does my hard headed bitch pay so little heed to it??? It worries me...if she ever nuts up and retaliates for all of the abuse...what else can you call forcing her to jump in ice water and swim to me with a duck in her mouth...I have given her she may end me and there ain't shite I can do to hurt here more than that damned collar hurt me....

Dogtra is good, as is the mini-educator. Both can be purchased from Amazon or gundogsupply.com

But most importantly, please take the time to learn how to use an ecollar. They are great tools for proofing a command but should not be used to teach a dog anything. Your dog has to understand the rules before you apply pressure/correct for inappropriate behavior.
I highly recommend leerburg.com videos, Michael Ellis in particular.

I understand what you mean. I've grown up with my dad having retrievers my whole life and been around the training. I even asked him for his recommendation, but wanted to also get some reviews on here. Like I said, I didn't want to break the bank on something. I only wanted to keep my dog from running to a jogger when I'm telling him to stay. But still, thanks for the tips and advice

Whatever brand you get, make sure it’s the highest voltage possible. Make sure it fits snug in your neck. Give a few jolts just to make sure it’s working properly. Then on command hold the button down.

I use a Garmin TriTronics. I like it a lot. I very seldom ever shock my dog. I use the tone and vibration option instead. She responds well to those.
