What does the tech board like the best for basic streaming? My chromecast just stopped connecting to my tv the last couple of days and want something different.

frick chromecast. i trashed my whole collection b/c the google nazis kept removing more and more casting from it to the point it was unusable.
firesticks will immediately be slow from the time you plug them in. god help you if you have one set to power on when you turn the TV on. the only thing that makes them remotely bearable is to plug them into power separately so you don't have to wait for that sluggish POS to slowly come to life.
roku is my #1 with a lemonade. simple, fast, good ux and i haven't found any apps i needed yet that require me to try & hack it.
so i'm gonna say roku ftw.

There is no great answer unfortunately.
Roku has the best interface, IMO but it is limited to HDR10.
The firestick might be the best choice because it is capable of Dolby Vision.

That being said, there were a couple oft times that I was trying to cast something and neither my roku nor my fire Tv wemas listed as an option. So I had to use chromecast. So I just keep it around but yeah don't use it much

well thats just dumb. the roku TCL TV I bought supports Dolby Vision as well. why wouldn't they feature-match their non-integrated devices?

If you plan to dabble in the darkside you'll probably want a firestick/tv as you can do more with them than you can a Roku.

Firetv cube - It works great. It has a faster processing speed than a firestick. It is not sluggish at all. I have a recast attached to an attic antenna so I have live local tv through the cube.
Fire Stick - I have two of them on secondary TVs and they are fine. Just a bit slower to load than the cube
Roku - I have a roku ultra that I use on my office tv. No problems at all but I can’t watch my recast live channels on it.

We use:
1 Roku stick
2 Fire stick's
2 Toshiba with FireTV built in
I will say that they are very similar but the Roku interface seems to be a little smoother.

Only Roku can answer that. They have not even made any statements about getting it added to their products. They seem to have zero interest.
Between this and their spat with At&t, I'm essentially forced away from my beloved Roku ultra and into Fire devices.
it is a shame because the auto refresh rate feature on the roku ultra works 100x better than it does on the fire devices.

reminds me of the debacle with sonos supporting dolby atmos
it amazes me how some companies can be so tone-deaf about supporting popular features begged for by thousands of their fanatical users.

What is this spat you speak of?

Roku pulled At&t off their platform. People who had the app installed before 1/4/2020 were allowed to keep it on their device but no new installations were allowed. So if you use it, do not remove it from a Roku device as you cannot put it back on.

Oh wow, was not aware of that. I have AT&T TV and have the app installed on 3 Roku's and had no idea. Thanks for the heads up.

I prefer the older FireTV with a hard line. Ran Cat5 to my TV equipment from my router. Thinking about getting the Cube or maybe the newer AppleTVs

Roku is extremely anti-piracy and your options are extremely limited in their system.
Get a man's streaming device and get an Nvidia Shield.

The shield was still struggling with auto refresh rate last time I checked. Anyone seeking high quality video will get irritated with the shield rather quickly.

TCL with Roku plays every 4K HDR video flawlessly including when o push 4K REMUXes to it from my Plex server.
Everything is hardwired and I've not as much as a hiccup.

Roku software is just above everyone else as far as software and ease of use for basic streaming like you said you're looking for. If you want something plug and play and don't even know what some of the terms people are throwing around then it's the solid choice. I do have TCL in 2 rooms now and not sure how I could go away from the interface.
