I’ll always remember ETA: the band announcer saying “....Director of Bands, Frank Wickes, conducts the Louisiana State University Alma Mater and our National Anthem.” Tiger Stadium history.

Except that Dan isn't the band announcer...

Sorry to hear this. He was one of the best ever.

Oh man, I so thoroughly enjoyed being a musician under his tutelage.
A consummate professional.
Pour one out...

Sorry to pin that on Dan.
Here is a video of Pregame before the 1989 Tennessee game. LINK
Awesome video for it being that old! Stadium looks weird without easy upper deck.
The band announcer in that video was a guy named Jim Mackey. I'm pretty sure that I read that he was the first announcer they ever had, starting in the 60's. I remember that voice distinctively from sitting in the stadium as a kid and in college. Very mello, not a lot of hype.
He was around til the late 90s or so...now Patrick Wright is the band announcer (same guy that does women's sports on radio). He is a little more "enthusiastic".
I love the Tiger Band now and they have made great strides, but it's great to go back in time and see what the band was back then. Amazing how pre-game hasn't changed much!
RIP Mr. Wickes. Your contributions to LSU will always be remembered.

This is my biggest concern now that there’s no Frank Wickes influence on the directors anymore. Once Roy got canned the Frank Wickes line ended and we now have people that don’t know or care about LSU’s traditions in charge. Tiger Band has been on the downslide since Frank Wickes retired and they let Linda Moorhouse walk. If they change pregame it would be curtains on them.

I have no knowledge of the inner workings of the band, but I can't see anyone daring to tinker with the first part of pregame.

The band has been on the rise ever since Roy left. The shows halftime shows have been so much better the past few year and the level of their performance has gone up.
The current directors know full well the LSU traditions and there will be no changes.

They can't even fill out 325 spots. The lack of brass is killing the band. You can barely hear them in the stands anymore. No one gives a crap about the halftime shows. Give us a big, loud band that does pregame well. That's what Roy gave you. A big, loud band that sounded great. Halftime shows lacked the last few years but no ones cares about halftime shows.

Bummer. I met him at Gino’s restaurant one time and told him he’s the only man in my life that has ever given me goosebumps. He said “I think I know what you mean”.

That will take away one of Gordy Rush's go-to phrases on the LSU postgame.

He and hot Linda were a solid duo.
RIP Good Sir.

Every once in a while he is, especially if Patrick has women's basketball announcing duty out of town. You can tell because Dan is usually a little behind --- the band hits the first note before Dan is finished... but it's ok.

I met him at Gino's too. Always there on Thursday nights drinking wine with his buddy Armando (LSU gymnastics coach). Nice guy.
