Let’s address a false talking point on this board re the politics of shutdowns

REGARDLESS of whether you support the lockdown measures or not (I’m of the belief that things needs to start opening ASAP, outside of hotspots), let’s get one thing straight:
the American public is firmly on the side of the measures. It’s overwhelming in most polls. Even in Michigan, polls there have shown 60%+ support governor umbridge’s measures.
Nationally, it’s in the 70s. It’s embarrassing and Americans are being hoodwinked, but how can it be good politics to go against something supported by 70%+ of Americans
Scruffy et al have a new talking point: trump “giving in” to the lockdown stuff hurt his re-election chances
Here’s the truth: even if it is a sign of bold leadership in the face of unhinged panic, trump fighting lockdown orders would tank his chances.
Can a genius on here explain how taking the side of 30% of people and angering 70% is a good political move?
It might be the right move and the appropriate move, but it is the wrong move politically.

So those 70% can stay home. Trump never has cared about what everyone else thinks. Maybe let people make their own choices....own the consequences.

People are also ignoring that even if Trump had been 100% anti-lockdown, almost all the governors were going to do it anyway.

the simple counter argument is:
in oct and nov when people's houses and 250s are being repossessed because the economy is in the shitter, what are people going to think?
"man, I wish we stayed shut down longer"
or
"whose idea was this, anyway?"

because fox news told him it was a good idea. i say that joking but there is some thruth to that statement.

Americans, in general, can’t think for themselves. Now, let’s add that roughly half want big government to take care of them. Shouldn’t be difficult to reach 70% when you add the latter number to a portion of the former.

Well said.

I never stopped working and really haven’t seen any difference in life other than empty store shelves which is scary. I do follow the rules cause I don’t want to bring this mess home to my diabetic wife. I steer clear of buildings I been wearing masks before it was popular, I sanitize everything and just generally avoid people. Other than masks this was normal anyhow. I think we can manage like this for a while without locking down all businesses. Wear there masks avoid people and stay away from small buildings with no good air flow. Destroying our country over this big was never a good answer to this.

I'm betting the vast majority of that 70% are Democrats.

Nice effort, OP, but this board has a growing element of posters that are the alter-egos of the left. I have my issues with how this has been handled, and I think Trump needs to be crafting the message better, but some of these threads are just "old man yelling at clouds" kind of stuff.
I don't agree with him completely, but Shapiro is doing a pretty decent job of flashing out the issue on a daily basis.

The beautiful thing about this country NOT being a true democracy is that my rights should never be beholden to the tyranny of the majority.

Wonder what that number will be once people figure out they were deceived at every turn about the creation, timeline, and deadliness of this virus.
Wonder what will happen once they fully realize what the lockdown did to their economy and how it ruined the livelihoods of many business owners

quote:I'll add to this that any "re-opening" is likely to be somewhat anemic. There will be no snapback in the immediate term following a re-opening. It's very hard to imagine organizing, insuring and then expecting large attendance at major gatherings for a very long time. Even if restaurants go back to 70% capacity, they will mostly fail.

Be prepared for this to go on for a very long time, regardless of what the government does or does not do.

Leaders lead.
By definition, if POTUS is just doing what the polls say, then he is a follower.
We can make excuses of why he should do that politically, but we can’t say it is strong leadership.

Yep.
Those 70% will also be the ones complaining about how shitty the economy is once our country grows a set of balls and gets back to normal.
The collateral damage that is being done to avoid COVID deaths is not worth avoiding those deaths.

But why?? Is it maybe because they have been fed a false narrative

at no time in this fiasco did trump show strong leadership.
he spent the first month in denial.
it will blow over as if a miracle.
thats his legacy.
pandering for the stock market.
clueless fool, outed over and over by his stumbling and lies.
the biden ad is trump.
just trump.
as he was during this crisis.
as he is.
deer in the headlights.
