ESPN recently released a list of player comparisons for top 2020 Draft Prospects and two former Tigers received NFL comps.

Joe Burrow to Tony Romo

quote:

Back in October, after Burrow completed 87.5% of his passes while shredding a good Florida defense, I said he reminded me of Romo -- and not because of their matching No. 9 jersey numbers. Romo was slippery in the pocket and an outstanding thrower on the run, and Burrow has that same awareness while slipping and sliding by pass-rushers. Romo, who spent his entire career quarterbacking the Dallas Cowboys, never had the biggest arm, but he made up for it with touch and accuracy. I see that with LSU's Burrow, too. -- Mel Kiper Jr., NFL draft analyst

Clyde Edwards-Helaire to Maurice Jones-Drew

quote:

"Reminds me a lot of Maurice Jones-Drew with a sawed-off build and strength. He doesn't have the straight-line speed of [Jones-Drew], but he's a do-it-all back, tough, catches out of the backfield, can get tough yards. Love him as a midround pick." -- AFC coordinator on the LSU and former Jacksonville Jaguars running backs

Other interesting comparisons:

Tua T. To Drew Brees and Russell Wilson
Jalen Hurts to Dak Prescott
Jordan Love to Patrick Mahomes
Isaiah Simmons to Derwin James

A Tony Romo who doesn't choke all the time is a hell of a player

I don't think any of the six listed are very good comparisons...

I don't mind the romo comparison but I believe Burrow is far more athletic than romo. I actually like the comparison burrow to wilson from the way he maneuvers in the pocket

I get Drew Brees... but Russell Wilson?

Russell is elite at evading rushers, and every time Tua tries something breaks or tears.

Both smaller, mobile QBs who excel at making plays out of the pocket. It is a popular comparison Ive seen

So why is Tua being compared to Brees? This is not the first I've heard of it, but I don't understand why. From the layman's perspective, I'd say it's just because they're all....short? Brees in his prime was analytical and could break down defenses before the snap while being deadly precise with his throws at all ranges. All I've heard about Tua is that he throws an accurate deep ball.

Burrow - Troy Aikman: both 6-4, 216lbs, incredibly accurate, great leaders, great football intelligence and instincts, coach’s dream, teammates love em, Alpha competitors.

CEH - Dalton Hilliard: practically the same size (CEH- 5-8, 209lbs)
(Dalton- 5-8, 204lbs)
Both players are compact, deceptively powerful, short burst quickness, low center of gravity, elite balance and vision, outstanding lateral cutting ability. Both players catch the ball well both advanced at this stage in blitz pickup. Both hard workers who surpassed expectations. game translates very well from college to the NFL.

Its like they don't look beyond stature.

RW and Brees are nothing alike.

I like the Aikman comp honestly. Burrow has something that I don’t think any other QB has in this draft.. which is the “It” factor. I don’t think I’ve seen a QB literally bounce back up and smile and tell you “I’m about to drop 400 on you” after some of the shots he’s taken (looking at you, UCF)

Burrow has a real shot at having hof career. The Romo comparison is high praise, no doubt. I think his "best case" is better than Romo. Maybe Steve Young

If Brees and Wilson were as fragile as a champagne glass.

Joe Burrow is a bigger, stronger Joe Montana or a bigger, stronger Drew Brees, if you like.

His value added is the space between his ears, plus "will to win" which cannot be coached.

I saw Mahomes single handedly carry T-Tech against a good LSU defense. He might as well have had no offensive line and yet they still scored 20 points.

Love is no Mahomes.

I know size wise CEH is closer to MJD but I keep thinking Brian Westbrook as far as actual game play

Burrow and Romo comp isn’t bad. Neither is CEH to MJD or Simmons to Derwin James.

Tua is not Brees or Wilson, he is made of glass and simply doesn’t have the ability to improvise like those two guys. Hurts is not nearly the passer Dak is or even was coming out of college, and that is saying something. There isn’t a guy in the game today that you can compare to Mahomes, and if there is it’s certainly not Jordan Love.

You know better than to compare stats from two different eras dude. Besides, for me it’s less about stats and more about mobility, pocket presence, winning, and unshakable accuracy. Burrow’s ceiling is higher than Romo.

Don’t let your lust for confrontation cloud your judgement.
