It amazes me there are still people out there dumb enough to think NYT is anything more than a progressive propaganda rag.

Violated chain of command

He’s an O6, he knows better, it’s a huge double standard between lower enlisted and higher Officers when it comes to UCMJ matters.

Unless you've served, you have no idea how much emphasis there is on chain of command and doing a job regardless. During a time of war, you aren't allowed to go all willy nilly and so in times of peace, you aren't allowed that either. You practice security, general quarters, various scenarios all the time to maintain your operation readiness. Along with this is not freaking out even if half your ship is dead. You still have a job to do. So yes, even in 'peacetime' this captain showed he couldn't be trusted to lead a tug crew, much less a nuclear powered carrier.

I don't expect people who haven't served to understand even a little bit and I'm sure it sounds odd. But those rules and traditions are put there to protect the country. Poo poo it all you want, but that's the real duty of our armed forces. Don't apply civilian rules to military personnel.

So much truth in what you’ve said.

It's been interesting watching this unfold. All the civilian comments are praising him and the veterans (myself included) are saying he fricked up.

My mom brought it up the other day and after I explained it to her from the military perspective she changed her opinion.
