Why would you want to get rid of something the players enjoy doing?
Exactly. Players reach their full potential through goal-oriented work.
If being a great leader, setting an example for other players through hard work, personality, commitment, etc., is promoted through the hope of earning this honor (as the players see getting one of these numbers or earning a captain designation), then what's the harm?
Odd topic to rant about, IMO.

Who cares..... I know. The guy that gets that number because he better perform at an elite level or it will get ugly.

Considering the donating power of the 7 wearers and that our most talented most highly recruited players want the 7.
It’s not going anywhere

7 + 18 = 25
Just saying, we could economize and save one number.

These traditions, were started by players, not fans or coaches. So get over it!

The OP and alterego55 need to just.... relax and don't let it ruin your day.
Don't be upset because band members never were given numbers.

Get off over it and stop caring about numbers like a grown up.
Same argument could be made AGAINST the tradition.
If the players want to keep doing it, fine. Let them. It’s just my personal opinion that bestowing a number on a player just gives fans an excuse to shite on them anytime they’re less than perfect because some dumb number demands perfection.
We saw it with Chark, Giles, and then Delpit—posts about how they “don’t deserve it.” I’d rather these players leave their own legacy and not have to measure up to what a number says they have to be.

Fans will shite on any player for being less than perfect, regardless of the number. Either way, that’s the fans problem, not the players and shouldn’t have any influence on players keeping a tradition they started.

Delpit ruined it with 7 missed tackles per quarter
