Ive been boat shopping for some time for a family with 2 small kids. Originally planned for center console like a bkuewave purebay 2200. Recently ive been looking at northern style multispecies boats (deep v, dual console walleye style boats). I really like the ranger angler 1880MS. I see few to none in the gulf coast. They seem to be good for lakes, bays and costal fishing based on deep hull and windscreen to keep the family dry. Good storage similar to bass boat but able to handle rough water like a bay boat.

Anyone have any experience with them? Really curious how they perform on the coast and in warmer climates.

Lord please no- you will look like a Yankee.

The drawback to that style boat as far as I can see is that they don’t lend themselves well to bow fishing with a trolling motor. Most of them are normally set up with a little gas kicker motor.

If you’re worried about a dry ride- get a good bay boat. It’ll bass fish just as good as a bass boat, and you have a good saltwater boat too.

ETA- I looked at the 1880 after and saw the bow trolling motor. So, you’re good there.

Other than looking like a Yankee- the only thing you may want to consider is on a primarily made freshwater boat, the hardware isn’t near as good as what a first class bay boat company will use.

ETA #2...that boat will likely draft about 16” and have a lot of deadrise back there. That will make you a terribly unhappy boy anywhere in the coastal marshes of LA or MS.

I have a 2000 model Ranger 681VS multi species boat.17 1/2 ft.,rated for 135 hp.Great boat IMO,Has rod locker and 2 storage compartments but still has lots of floor space.
Rides like a dream in rough water.I like the floor space,I hate bass boats nowadays with all the compartments and no floor space.
I think it would be good boat for taking kids fishing, sides a little deeper so they aren’t as likely to fall out.Bow mount troll motor works fine,I don’t know where that idea came from.
Bay boats are pretty nice if there is one that’s not all white. The glare off all that whiteness gives me a headache even with sunglasses.

I like the same style boat as I love open floor space with young kids. I don’t need much deck space. I’d love to buy a G3 Sportsman 2400 right now

I cant imagine any advantage they have over a bay boat but plenty disadvantages, especially in louisiana. I think the yankee boats are cheaper, otherwise bay boats are the shite.

Something like an 18' center console bay boat allows you to do everything the state offers inshore and fresh water. 21+ gives you all that plus some snapper on perfect days. I've limited out on red snapper, redfish, and put specks in the box all in the same day out of mine. Took the wife perch jerking a week ago in the same boat. You cant beat a bay boat for Louisiana

Biggest drawback is they don't really get over 17-18 ft that I saw.

I wanted one for the longest time. Same reason. Small kids but more fishable than a pontoon...

Ended up not getting one...cause I didn't buy anything. Medical got me before I could buy a boat. Still don't have one. Lol

I saw the exact Deep V Ranger you are talking about last weekend when someone pulled up at the landing. No way you're going to take that in the marsh, especially in the winter. They call it a deep V for a reason, you'll need plenty of water to float it. You'd probably hit way more stumps than most people too. I'm good, I'll stick to the aluminum center console.

Are you talking about with Carpet? You don't want carpet in saltwater, not even a little bit. If you dip a freshwater boat into the saltwater you are going to get rust pretty quick.

Also, bay boats are made to stand up to take bigger waves and see further in 1-2 ft seas. You ever ridden down low in a bass boat style seating in 1 ft waves? Try it before you buy.

ulti-Species/Deep-V Boats in LA

Coastal fishing in La will have you nearly always contending with some kind of wind. A friend of mine has the Tracker Targa and it sits high with lots of broadside for the winds to play with. Rides nice, though.

i should have added that Ranger is making a 1880MSI (I for intercostal similar to the bass boat). See the link below from a random site on google.

LINK

I didnt think about visibility issues in rough waters. very good point.

Manufacturers dont publish draft numbers because they are not designed for shallow water but generally they are 15-20", not much more than a 20' bay boat.

My biggest concern is cost and resale. Would have to buy a $50K boat that no one in the south wants to buy used in 5-10yrs.

Champion used to make a “Coastal” model that had the Bay Champ Hull but a dual console configuration. It was designed for salt water so it was white like boats around here and didn’t have carpet. I always liked that one. There are still some used ones out there if you look around.
