Outboard rebuild Vs powerhead replacement
Posted by SupaD on 7/29/21 at 7:38 pm
I have an 2006 optimax 90. Has low compression and won’t run. Mechanic quoted $8k to replace powerhead. I asked about a rebuild and they said they don’t do that, but Quoted $11k for new motor with a 6month delivery. What do y’all think?
Is $8k is overpriced?
Worth trying to rebuild?
Buy new motor?
Currently planning to call around for better pricing.

LA boaters safety course
Posted by SupaD on 6/19/21 at 10:50 am
I have to get my boaters safety card and I’m looking for a course. I’ve been in boats for years just never taken the course, but I am confident I can pass the test without sitting in an 8hr class. Are there any courses where I can pass the test without having to sit thru the class portion?
wow, no one for gas? i love my blaze gas grill. Quick and easy for grilling, great for veggies. Only problem is flare ups with fatty meat. I also have a primo thats great for everything if you have 30min to get the coals going.
Gas if you want easy cooks, quick start up. Not good at low and slow. This is my monday - thursday grill.
Pellets win at low and slow. no a fan of the sear boxes i have seen. have heard of issues with pellets jamming in LA humidity.
Kamadao (green egg, primo..) is the best do it all grill. Plus they dont dry food out like the others due to the great insulation. Everything is expensive for them so be careful when buying accessories.

I like a smaller affordable unit up front since its usually only sonar and sometimes contour maps for deepwater bass fishing. Side scan on the console, go for the bigger unit here for better clarity and ability to split screen or see for a nice 100' wide scan. I have a 9" and it works good. If money isnt an object love scope up front or a second screen for contour maps/topos.
Hummingbird seems to be the better technology to me but its marginal. I do notice that it come with mapping software standard and its a upgrade for my lowerance ti.

Pontoon for bay fishing
Posted by SupaD on 5/12/20 at 5:54 pm
Planning a trip to grand isle in a month and debating on brining my 22' pontoon with 90hp. Should be plenty of power and its set up really well for fishing just worried about rough water chop. Anyone have any recommendations. how much is too much?
I will have young kids with me at times so that factors in. Wouldnt be too concerned with just experienced boaters on board.

+1 to rtic soft side. 20 was a bit small but 30 was perfect for me. Bought a bunch for work a few years ago and all the ones that were in truck beds came unglued pretty quick. Mine held up fine until it was empty and blew out the boat when trailering home.
Interest rates are low now. Finnance if you want a boat. Just make sure you really can afford the note and its not gonna stretch your finnances.
I was quoted rates on a used boat priced at $35k with about 5k down 6 months ago and got rates in the 4% range. Talked to lots of people and got best quote from wings financial. it was based on using the boat as collateral.

i should have added that Ranger is making a 1880MSI (I for intercostal similar to the bass boat). See the link below from a random site on google.

I didnt think about visibility issues in rough waters. very good point.
Manufacturers dont publish draft numbers because they are not designed for shallow water but generally they are 15-20", not much more than a 20' bay boat.
My biggest concern is cost and resale. Would have to buy a $50K boat that no one in the south wants to buy used in 5-10yrs.

Multi-Species/Deep-V Boats in LA
Posted by SupaD on 3/4/20 at 6:24 pm
Ive been boat shopping for some time for a family with 2 small kids. Originally planned for center console like a bkuewave purebay 2200. Recently ive been looking at northern style multispecies boats (deep v, dual console walleye style boats). I really like the ranger angler 1880MS. I see few to none in the gulf coast. They seem to be good for lakes, bays and costal fishing based on deep hull and windscreen to keep the family dry. Good storage similar to bass boat but able to handle rough water like a bay boat.
Anyone have any experience with them? Really curious how they perform on the coast and in warmer climates.
