Streets of Fire was a dud as was Eddie and the Cruisers. Ediie and the Cruisers was played endlessly though on HBO and got it attention. Both movies were the highlight of the career of Michael Pare' as a lead...he kinda sucked. But, his supporting characters both went onto big success. Diane Lane in SOF and Tom Berenger in Eddie.

Linda was incredibly hot in Vision Quest. Was a huge Modine fan after this movie. Another Linda movie from that time frame that I loved was Gotcha! Miss movies like this.

Shute would have wrecked skinny arse Matthew Modine.
Good movie tho.

No real interest in wrestling, but I love this movie. Made my kid watch it last summer. Easily in my top 5 sports movies.

don't know how you could grow up in the 80's and miss Vision Quest
I was like 5 when the decade ended... So Linda Fiorentino and troubled teen angst werent exactly in my wheelhouse.
It was Goonies and Ghostbusters more so than John Hughes and wrestling

Geez guys...y’all sent me down a rabbit hole today. Found Vision Quest on VUDU for free and watched that with my 14 year old..Linda Fiorentino was a smoke show.
Anyway, the whole time I’m watching I can’t get a movie from the late 70’s out of my head but can’t place it. Another high school wrestling movie...only could remember bits and pieces but no title. Drove me crazy all day...until just a few minutes ago...
1979’s Take Down. First Disney produced film to ever garner a PG rating and featured a very young Lorenzo Llamas. This was an early 80’s cable staple. See link if you are becoming an old Fack like me and want some daytime television memories awoken.

No idea, I own the dvd. No idea why it strikes me so. I wrestled but it's not that.

Same same
The scene where Linda F has come to see Loudan take on Chute, and they talk in the locker room. After she tells him why she left, and he begins to understand it all, tells her he'd do it all over again.
She walks off, then comes back around the corner and says "hey Loudan.... kick his arse".
The way she says it, Jersey girl attitude with equal parts sexiness and machismo. I still get a rise in the Levis.

Love that scene where he works the peg board...great song playing while he climbs it.
Side note: the detective with the neck burns from the Outsider on HBO look like an older schute

Just a solid soundtrack altogether:

So many soundtrack songs are really linked to a certain movie, but it feels like this soundtrack really put together a great mix tape as a soundtrack.
Most all of those songs can still be heard in many classic rock radio stations.
I still think it's slightly deeper, but the overall feel on both are just really similar.
They also have great small scenes by non lead characters. The Elmo Pele scene being one and The dad in Breaking Away when he goes back to the old stone mill.
Both films also highlight very well smallish, blue collar cities that are not featured at all really in TV or movies.
They both basically make your day better by watching them.

Two awesome quotes from Breaking Away:
Dad: I was proud of my work. And the buildings went up. When they were finished the damnedest thing happened. It was like the buildings were too good for us. Nobody told us that. It just felt uncomfortable, that's all.
Dad: You guys still go swimmin' in the quarries?
Dave: Sure.
Dad: So, the only thing you got to show for my 20 years of work is the holes we left behind?

Best scene in the movie. The dad makes the film.
