I've had a WD My Cloud for the past 8 years and I need to replace it. Thinking about going with something different. Any suggestions?

Depends on how many drives you want mostly. I'm assuming youre looking for standalone (not rack mounted) units. The model numbers follow this pattern dsNyy with N being disk number and yy being the model manufacture year. There's some exceptions but that's at least most of them. Sometimes they have a J or + appended I forgot what specifically they mean. But it indicates things like better video transcoding.

More drives gives you more capacity and more spindles for more IO but more drives also means more money. Synology also has a ton of useful packages available so take a look at what you want it to do and make sure both that it's compatible and it'll have enough resources to run it. Most can run docker too. Just some things to keep in mind. I've got a ds412+ and it's a trooper, but it's definitely gotten long in the tooth.

Actually just purchased the synology ds918+ yesterday. I did a fair amount of research and it seems to be pretty well regarded. Will report back once I have it set up later this week.

Nice, look forward to hearing about it! I looked at this model as well but it seemed like overkill for my use.

My QNAP 451+ has been working solid for me over the last couple of years. I do have 4 - 8TB red drives which were shucked and upped my ram to max. Works perfectly for my plex and can handle a few streams at a time. 4K videos not so much but I just have a few of those.

I'm interested in this also. Is there one that I can just connect to my network switch and be able to see it from any computer or device on the network? I have an old Buffalo NAS and if it is connected to my desktop, I can see everything. If I connect it to the switch I can see it on the network, but can't access any files.

ETA: I would prefer SSD if possible.

first guess would be that you probably need to have the permissions allowing "anonymous" access to the volumes/shares. Were you able to access the admin webpage to configure the device?

Depending on how big you need the NAS and why you want SSDs.....unless you are looking to reduce heat, noise and power consumption, then SSDs might be a big waste of $$$. You will likely see no speed benefit unless you are running 10G ethernet. Striped spinning rust is fast enough to well saturate any 1G link (even with jumbo frames) for a small number of active client hosts (less than a dozen?)

Again, depends on how much storage you want/need and the network load.

If you are running 10G copper or glass for a home network, you'd likely not be here asking for advice.

I’ve been wondering once I get the synology set up to act as Plex server if the HDDs will spin down/hibernate when media isn’t being streamed through Plex? I know you have qnap, but wondering if your drives spin down when not in use?

Then again you might have your NAS to setup so that the drives don’t spin down.

Even when I have the software on my other computer, I can see the drive but can't access the files. It is a Buffalo linkstation. Can't remember the model right now.

do you know the IP of the NAS, or is it direct connected to another PC? You're gonna have to get into the web-admin page to check your permissions.

When I connect the NAS directly to the desktop via network cable, I can access all the files. Once it is connected to the switch on the same network, I can see the drive, but my desktop or surface pro can't access any of the files. I'll look into the permissions this weekend.

We use a 10 tb Buffalo Terastation at work, definitely check your permissions, also be aware that improper shutdown will reset domain login information.

Go big or go home IMO. I built an unRaid server. 32TB of storage plus 10TB parity drive currently. Expandable up to 13 x 10TB data and 2 x 10TNB parity drives. Of course you can also use 12TB and larger drives, but I'm happy with 10TB sizes for now.
