Wife and I are looking to go in May but don’t know much about the area

The Vendue. Very nice and atmospheric hotel within easy walking distance to the waterfront and anywhere else you would want to go. Plenty great restaurants nearby. Two nice bars in the hotel including one on the rooftop.

Dewberry
Hotel Bennett
Wentworth Mansion
Pavilion
These are if $$ not object but all good location hotels will be pricey there.
Cheaper are Francis Marion, Pinckney Inn, Harbor View.

Hotel Bennett IMO, Right on King St where everything happens. It's a classic Charleston hotel

Staying here at the end of the month. Looking forward to it! Glad to hear more good reviews.

Belmond and Vendue are two hotels we've used. Both are very nice.

Look into AirBnB’s owned by Luxury Simplified Retreats. We got an apartment right around the corner from the Vendue for under $200/night. It was really nice and spacious.
A ton of stuff to do in that area of town and a short walk or Uber ride to do pretty much anything on the peninsula.

I've stayed twice at the Market Pavilion Hotel, both times on the concierge level.
Fabulous accommodations and great location on East Bay Street. Roof top bar overlooking the harbor.
Check it out.

You can stay across the bridge in Mt Pleasant for much cheaper.

I went last April. Weather was amazing.
We stayed at an Airbnb right above the restaurant "SNOB" (one block away from the Vendue). Very nice and perfect area. Much cheaper than the hotels as well.
Vendue is very nice. We went there a few times to hangout at their rooftop bar.
honestly wouldn't worry to much about the room just get something close to the market on E Bay St and everything is walkable from there. Charleston was an amazing place. Would definitely move there if it was an option

The Dewberry, the Bennett, or the Belmond.
Belmond is Orient Express. They rebranded a few years ago.

I've been looking at these hotels you all mentioned and they are wanting Ritz Carlton prices for these places. Is downtown where I want to stay? I want to be close to good restaurants and bars. How far is the beach?

The Vendue is my favorite. Very nice hotel right in the middle of the historic district. Many great restaurants nearby and an easy walk to anywhere you would want to go. Two great bars in the hotel including one on the rooftop.

So is King Street the main street downtown where all the bars and restaurants are located?

There are nice food and bar options all over the downtown area.

There are some different beach options. Folly Beach on James Island, Sullivan’s Island in Mt. Pleasant (my personal favorite), Isle of Palms.

It’s definitely the main street for shopping with some food spots sprinkled in, but there’s bars and restaurants scattered throughout downtown.
