Saints want to keep Taysom Hill as Drew Brees’ heir apparent

hmmm
"Saints quarterback Drew Brees has not yet decided whether to retire. If he chooses to stay, the Saints will welcome him back with open arms. But the Saints also believe that in Taysom Hill, they have their quarterback of the future already on the roster.
Jay Glazer of FOX Sports reported today that Saints coach Sean Payton believes that Hill is ready to become the Saints’ franchise quarterback as soon as Brees retires.
The problem for the Saints is that they only have about $12 million in cap space for 2020, and that makes it financially difficult to afford to keep both Brees and Hill. With Hill set to become a restricted free agent, the Saints may put a first-round tender on Hill and then wait to see whether some team makes him an offer. If that were to happen, the Saints would have to decide whether to match that offer or to take that team’s first-round draft pick."

Great news. I believe in Taysom as well.

Taysom will be 30 years old next season.

and 31 the year after

Then what happens?
Tank for Lawrence? The reality of this statement very well could be that they want to make sure they bring Hill in, so they want to say the right things for Hill. Also, they wouldn't want to tip their hands if they are planning to bring in someone via FA/Draft. With that said, until that players is a FA, I don't think they could talk about them anyway.

Almost sounds as if the Saints are talking him up in hopes of getting a 1st rounder for him.

So we gonna build around a 30 year old QB who relies on athleticism?
That sound smart to you?

Smarter than letting him go and relying on a geriatric QB for maybe another year.

This is likely Mickey Loomis starting the transition. Sean can't quit Drew. Mickey is gonna do it for him.
Lots of PR language in here, but I think this is a message to Drew as well.

Then state the options! Keeping them a secret?

I think:
(A) Brees is retiring
(B) Hill could work but probably won’t be running nearly as much. He can make all the throws. Why not give him a shot. He may be 31 but you can still roll with him 3-5 years while looking for the next franchise QB.

Exactly. Hill isn't going to be Lamar Jackson but his increased mobility and threat to run opens the offense up a ton.

People are so easily blinded because of all the great shite he's done at other positions.
He runs well but his type of running isn't Lamar Jackson style running. Hill takes too many shots and his passes coming out of his hand look awkward and tend to float and he's not nearly as accurate as he could be. This will not work out but maybe Brees will retire, we suck next year and are able to draft Lawrence.

Not if he cant hit his passes consistently which he won't be able to.

Best look I saw was in preseason and he did pretty well.
Posted on 1/27/20 at 5:45 pm to t00f
His best plays are with his legs. That hardly ever works out long term for guys like that. He can't consistently win with his arm, same with Lamar.
Hell in the preseason, unless someone was wide the frick open, he just took off and ran it. He doesn't throw guys open or fit throws into tight windows. But people dont want to look at that. They want to correlate his successful runs, the lucky deep shots off gimmick plays Payton has drawn up for him, the block punts, the fake punts and all the things that make him great and think that will transition over into him playing QB. It won't and people are delusional

Either you meant to say short supply or you're using a weird way to say he's gonna be good.
