My wife and I will be visiting friends in Portland for a day or so and then plan on going off on our own for the rest of the week. I’ve heard good things about Oregon wine country and we’d also like to check out the coast.

We’ve visited them in Portland before so we have that handled. They are recent transplants in Oregon and have younger children so they haven’t had much time to explore outside of Portland. Thanks!

Definitely go west to the coast. Cannon Beadh, seaside etc.

Southern Oregon would be sweet to visit if you have enough tome to go down towards Bend, OR.

just worked there for 3 months. What time of year will you be there? So many things to do and see. From portland def drive the Gorge and do some waterfalls. Hood River is a good little town that direction.

The coast is a must. Obviously Cannon Beach is great but there are many nice towns along the coast. Astoria was one of my favorite towns. You also have Tillamook with Cape Lookout State Park nearby which as a great hike as well as campground. Definitely visit Depoe Bay to see the whales if you are there at the right time.

Lots of wineries in Willamette Valley. We bought the Oregon Wine Passport and stopped at many participating wineries which offer free and discounted tastings etc.

So many good breweries in Oregon as well with Great Notion, Cascade, and De Garde being some of my favorites.

Bend, OR is prob my favorite town and Smith Rock hike is awesome. Crater Lake is a little of a drive but worth it if you have time. We stayed at Diamond Lake campground near by which was great.

You can’t go wrong with any of the National Forests from Bend to Portland. They’re all amazing. Crater Lake is also amazing.

Best time of the year.

You mentioned wine but just in case you’re interested the best beer festival is Aug 13-15 in Bend.....Bend Brewfest. If you go you can drive I-84 east to Hood River then head south to Bend. I’d suggest a night in Hood River if you do or don’t go. Lots of good wine locally there.

If you go south to Bend search Trillium lake and look at images. If you want that pic of Mt. Hood it’s very close to the highway 35/26 junction. You backtrack a mile but you’ll see that on maps. If it’s a weekend the state is charging 5 bucks to get in now....yep, 5 bucks for a pic.

Have your directions, screenshot of the area map, ready in case of no cell service. Everyone loses service very near that area for a bit. The drive south is pretty nice.

You can do a loop from Portland to Astoria to Tillamook and back. Just drive through Seaside unless tourist traps are your thing. Or from Portland to Cannon Beach to Tillamook.

Cannon Beach is beautiful. Visit Ecola state Park.

There are lots of viewpoints on your drive south and many hikes.

As you get close to Manzanita there are viewpoints of the town/beach from above that are nice.

Tillamook has the creamery. Great ice cream stop and you can try some basic cheese. I love the cheese curds. You can only buy them there.

de Garde is a must stop for me but it’s the only reason I go to Tillamook.

From there you can head to the Valley and get your wine tours going if you already haven’t .

The only thing I didn't see on your to do list is Bend. Beautiful country, awesome brewery scene and lots of outdoors activities. You can golf or go whitewater rafting on the Deschutes or mountain/trail biking along the river

Great time of year.

I can't recommend the North Coast enough. If you want to do wine country, do that, then head West to the coast and loop back to Portland.

The entire coast is stunning, but my wife and I gravitated to Cannon Beach. There are a ton of beautiful outdoors places within 15 min. Oswald West, Ecola State Park, Haystack Rock, all of them are tremendous.

If you haven't seen the Pacific Northwest coast, it will blow you away.

whitewater rafting on the Deschutes

OP, if an option go rafting out of Maupin. It's the best section of the deschutes. I do it every August on my way home from the Bend Brewfest.

Can do it on the way to Bend or on the return trip. It's not too far out of the way and it's a much more exciting whitewater trip than the upper Deschutes.

Several companies to book with. Groupons available. If you go make sure you request to be on a raft that will go over oak springs rapid. It's the highlight rapid of the trip and kids under a certain age will be put on a boat that will bypass it and be the safety boat in case the other boats need help.

You don't want to miss it by unknowingly being put on the safety boat and they overall don't let it rip or do any surfing etc.

You were lucky. They are implementing a permit system in the surrounding area this year.

Several areas are being restricted.

I’ve read that the permit system won’t be too hard to get around for people who are dedicated. How hard will it be to get passes if I wake up early and get to the Ranger station (or the equivalent) when they open? I understand the permit system hasn’t started yet so you may not know.

I went to Bend last year and loved it. Some trails were very crowded though (Broken top). I was hoping to bring the SO through the area in the upcoming summer.

Yeah, none of us really know. I haven't checked lately. I will. I'd imagine a weekday pass will be easiest. Every hiking/climbing/running group in within 4 hours will put in for every weekend available.

Day passes will be held so it won't be impossible but who knows.

That area was one of the biggest factors in it all happening. There are trails that aren't that busy but got lumped in because of their location. Just figured those trails will get overrun next.

All the runners in Bend decided that roads weren't good enough and that they should all run trails so now we all suffer.

Broken Top was completely ridiculous & definitely was in dire need of permits. I saw more people on that trail than I did on every other trail combined during my time out there, which went for over a month. Hopefully the system won’t be too restrictive though.
