MJ?
I didn't see 100,000 people in front of his house withing hours after his death.
Elvis was much bigger, and a bigger shock.

Are we talking specifically celebrities to tragically die before their time?
Because I’d say that prolific actors and music stars were more well known worldwide than Kobe.

The trifecta of Michael Jackson, Ed McMahon, and Farrah Fawcett within about 48 hours of each other in 2009 will probably never be topped.

MJ for sure
Michael Jackson disappeared from the public consciousness. Kobe was still a presence in BB and media.
We all kind knew MJ had demons and it wasn’t as shocking to hear of his death as it was Kobe’s. Some refused to mourn MJ.
I’d say Robin Williams because his death had the public viewing life in a different perspective much in the same way Kobe’s death has us acknowledging how precious and temporary life truly is

John Lennon was definitely a shocker for me.

Good call. His death paralyzed the world for a bit

Probably Prince in terms of similar public statute.
I still say this is the biggest surprise celebrity death in the USA since Elvis.

There are too many ways to interpret this question.

If this is the question, you have many candidates from Princess Di, MJ, Kobe, John Lennon, Elvis, etc.
Kobe was huge and is fresh on everyone's mind, but I don't think he's the biggest. Princess Diana and Elvis have to be as big as you can get. Elvis has been dead for about 42 years and his house gets over a half million visitors per year. Elvis' birthplace is a museum. Princess Di's death was the only thing on the news for a while when that happened. She was loved just about worldwide. Not trying to take away from Kobe at all.

Not even close. Not even top 5, maybe not even Top 10.
If you didn’t watch NBA you probably only heard his name from that scandal.
We’ve had huge untimely celebrity deaths with more widespread appeal outside of a sport Since Elvis. That’s 43 years ago.
I think you are vastly overstating his impact outside of basketball. He wasn’t Michael Jordan.
Just off the top of my head, Williams, Bowie, Freddie Mercury, Rickman,
Now if you said “sport stars”...sure he’d be Top 5. But not overall

Of course not. I don’t have anything against him at all. But to suggest he’s the biggest untimely celebrity death in 42 years is asinine and seems to forget all the far more impactful deaths that have occurred in over 4 decades

Well basketball is a global sport and Kobe was the biggest star/icon for a decade

Heck, that was a crazy period to the point it was a South Park episode.
