LSU football has done more this century nationally than any team not named Bama

How can people keep a straight face and actually get away with a "flash in the pan" argument as to LSU football and the 2019 season?

Because people have really short/selective memories and attention spans, and thus 90% of the casual football-watching population thinks that the only noteworthy teams in CFB are Clemson, Bama, and Ohio State.

Certainly a case can be made for that. Only Alabama has more national titles. Only Ohio St. and Oklahoma have finished ranked in the final polls more often than the 17 times that LSU has in the 20 years of the 21st Century. LSU has Clemson beat in both categories.

I don't think anyone who has followed football for more than 8 years thinks that LSU is a "Flash in the Pan".

We are a highly respected program and in the last 20 years a Top 2-5 Program.

Anyone that even suggests something so stupid I wouldn't even have a conversation with about football or anything else.

I honestly hadn't looked up nat'l chamnpionships in the 2000s until this question so I was generally curious

5 - Alabama
3 - LSU

This isn't how a flash-in-the-pan works.

also ran
2 - tOSU
2 - Florida
2 - Clemson

So yes, looking at that LSU is breathing down Alabama's neck (frick 2011) because we would be tied with bama despite all the hype over saban. thats incredible if you think about it.

SECW 2000s - 9
SECE 2000s - 2

It’s mostly Clemson fans saying that from what I’ve seen.

If you want an answer to your question, visit their message board and see for yourself how clueless and/or delusional a large contingent of their fanbase is.

It’s as though they either just started following football during Clemson’s first playoff run or their memory only goes back a few years.

LSU has had more success historically and this century than Clemson. LSU has more titles all-time and over the past 20 years than Clemson.

LSU has also done all of this in the toughest division of the toughest conference in all of college football. Every single year LSU plays more legit title contenders in the regular season than Clemson would if they made the playoff and got to the NCG.

The SEC has won 13 of the past 24 championships.* Five different SEC teams have won a championship since 1998, and six have played for one. Four different SEC teams have multiple titles since 2003 if we count Auburn’s 13-0 2004 team as co-champion.

Before the playoffs even started, LSU had beaten 4 teams that were better than anyone Clemson played including the ACC Championship Game. Additionally, LSU beat Clemson’s toughest opponent pre-playoff 50-7, and beat another team that was as good or better than the #2 ACC team (ACC runner-up had 5 losses).

They know they won’t be challenged all season because their conference is weak and their toughest non-conference game is a fringe top-25 team next year, just as it was this past season.

If Miami, FSU and Virginia Tech don’t get their shite together soon, the CFP Committee should make the ACC Champion (if undefeated) play the highest ranked AAC or Mountain West team as a play-in game.

Point being, Clemson’s fanbase has a lot of “special” people who are still bewildered about what transpired on 1/13 and are trying to rationalize the arse whooping by saying anything they can think of that makes them feel better about watching their team be castrated on national TV with the entire country watching.

* It would and probably should be 14 of the last 24 championship teams being from the SEC. West Coast media bias propped up the 2004 USC team as the best team ever while ignoring an unbeaten Auburn team that arguably had a better resume.

It’s total bullshite that 2003 USC is recognized as co-champion but not 2004 Auburn.

They’ve won 3 in 16 years. They’ve been to 4 in that periodic. 1/4 of the championships over the past 16 years have featured LSU. Likely win that 4th against anyone that’s not Alabama.

Your point is well made but it's 3 in the last 17 years. When the 2002 season ended LSU had not won any national titles since 1958. Seventeen (17) seasons have passed since the end of the 2002 season. We are now at the end of the 2019 season and LSU has won THREE national titles since the end of 2002. It's 3 in 17 years.

Just imagine if Okie Lite had beaten Iowa State. We’d both be sitting at 4. Hell, we could’ve had even more than that honestly. If 1/9/12 never happened, there’s no telling where our program would’ve gone. Regardless, blessed to be where we are now.
